HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – There are raw ambitions to be realized when the Grade 3 Forward Gal and Grade 3 Swale are renewed Saturday as part of the Holy Bull undercard at Gulfstream Park. The Forward Gal, as a 40-point qualifier (20-8-6-4-2) toward the May 5 Kentucky Oaks, seems a more realistic springboard to longer races than its open counterpart, although Super Chow might actually have the greatest star potential as a huge favorite in the Swale. The Swale (race 6, 2:15 p.m. Eastern) is the first of five stakes on a 12-race card that starts at 11:50, while the Forward Gal goes as race 10 at 4:17. Both races offer purses of $125,000. Forward Gal “Distance shouldn’t be a problem” for the unbeaten Red Carpet Ready, said trainer Rusty Arnold, speaking not only to the Forward Gal but future endeavors. “She did surprise us first out” in winning at Churchill by 10 lengths at 37-1, “but as we’ve gone along, we’ve come to think of her as potentially a top horse. Hopefully this race moves us forward.” :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. A victory in her only subsequent race, the Fern Creek Stakes at Churchill, validated her stunning debut, and now the waters get deeper as she faces the likes of Atomically, Undervalued Asset, and Positano Sunset, all of them harboring similar goals. Atomically (post 3, Jose Ortiz) posted two eye-catching romps versus Florida-breds last year before being privately purchased and finishing a decent seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in her first start for Todd Pletcher. “We got a little delayed getting her started but she’s been training nicely,” said Pletcher. “It’s good to know she’s had some success over this track.” Undervalued Asset (post 7, Irad Ortiz Jr.) was heavily bet as an 8 1/4-length winner of her lone career try in November at Aqueduct for the powerhouse barn of Chad Brown. Positano Sunset (post 9, Julien Leparoux) also is just a maiden winner but got it done with an 80 Beyer Speed Figure, surpassed only by an 83 earned by Atomically. Other considerations in a deep lineup include Twice as Sweet and Lynx, both of them ungraded stakes winners at 2. The Forward Gal, first run in 1981 as a tribute to the champion 2-year-old filly of 1970, has produced Kentucky Oaks winners Open Mind (1989) and Cathryn Sophia (2016), along with a handful of other notables such as Forever Together (2007). The 2022 winner was Girl With a Dream for trainer Brad Cox. Swale There’s no way around it. Even when racing as far as seven furlongs for the first time, Super Chow towers over the four other colts and one gelding in the 37th Swale after winning five of his six career starts, including victories with ever-improving Beyers in his last three – the Bowman Mill at Keeneland, the Inaugural at Tampa Bay Downs, and the Limehouse at Gulfstream. :: Get ready for Gulfstream Park racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  “He’s in his best shape ever,” said his trainer, Jorge Delgado, referring partly to a trio of interim Gulfstream breezes since Super Chow won the Jan. 1 Limehouse with an 84 Beyer. “He’s becoming a man.” With Chantal Sutherland back to ride, Super Chow figures to have clear sailing from his outside post when seeking a fourth straight stakes win, probably at something in the 3-5 tote range. Owned by the Lea Farms of Cleveland mortgage magnate Bill Cosgrove, the Lord Nelson colt has never trailed in the turn for home in any of his prior starts, with his only defeat having come in the Saratoga Special in August. Aaraj could be second choice, given that Irad Ortiz Jr. rides, or maybe that role will fall to General Jim, who’s turning back for Shug McGaughey following a series of longer races, the latest resulting in a fourth-place finish as a lukewarm favorite in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man here Jan. 1. Two of a Kind, Keanu, and King Sparrow round out the cast. The Swale honors the ill-fated colt who won the 1984 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes for Claiborne Farm, which has been the title sponsor of this race the last few years. Easy Goer (1989), Housebuster (1990), Favorite Trick (1998), and Lost In the Fog (2005) are the most renowned prior winners. Pletcher won last year with My Prankster. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
