DEL MAR, Calif – Sugar Fish, a Grade 2 winner who was one of the surprise 3-year-old fillies in California this season, will cut back to one turn for her final start of the year following a fifth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Trainer Jeff Mullins said Sugar Fish will target the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes, a seven-furlong stakes for 3-year-old fillies traditionally run Dec. 26, opening day of the Santa Anita winter meet. Sugar Fish came out of the BC Distaff in top shape according to Mullins. “Now all we have to do is freshen her up, give her one last shot, then we’ll give her a break and bring her back for her 4-year-old campaign,” he said. Sugar Fish’s 3-year-old campaign is already a success. After winning a $40,000 maiden claiming sprint, she won Grade 2 routes at Santa Anita – the Summertime Oaks in June, and Zenyatta against older fillies and mares in September. Michael Talla is the majority owner of Sugar Fish; her co-owner is Kim Lloyd. Sugar Fish has won four races and $370,040 from nine starts. She is the leading earner by Accelerate. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
