ARCADIA, Calif. - Subsanador, unraced since a win in the Grade 1 California Crown at Santa Anita last September, will have a delayed comeback from an ankle injury and will not resume training until late summer, trainer Richard Mandella said. Subsanador recently underwent diagnostic tests that showed he needed additional time for recovery. “He’ll get four more months and we’ll X-ray it again,” Mandella said. “We’ve sent him to Kentucky. We’ll give him more time. The main thing is to get him back.” Last fall, Mandella said Subsanador’s injury would not require any surgery. Owned by Wathnan Stud, Subsanador earned a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic with the win in the California Crown, only to miss the race. :: Playing Santa Anita? A 6-year-old Argentine-bred horse, Subsanador has won 9 of 17 starts racing in Argentina and California. Subsanador was a Group 1 winner at about a mile on dirt in Argentina in 2023 before being relocated to California. Subsanador was trained by John Sadler for his first two starts in California, including a second by a head in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March. Purchased privately by Wathnan Stud and transferred to Mandella last spring, Subsanador was fourth in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita in May before winning the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin Stakes at Monmouth Park last August. The Mandella-trained Big City Lights, the easy winner of sprint stakes for statebreds in November and December, has been turned out for a rest because of concern over a knee condition, Mandella said. “We’ll give it some time,” Mandella said. Until recently, Big City Lights was under consideration for stakes in Arkansas and Dubai. Owned by Bill Peeples, the 6-year-old has won 7 of 13 starts and earned $578,420. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
