With a stakes victory and a Grade 3-placing on dirt at Saratoga, Studlydoright is the most accomplished horse in Saturday’s $150,000 Laurel Futurity. The question is whether the Maryland-bred will transfer his main-track form to turf in the $150,000 stakes for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles. Studlydoright’s pedigree indicates he should do fine. His dam was a stakes winner and Grade 3-placed on grass. His second dam was restricted stakes-placed on turf. “I know a lot of his family handles turf, so I was looking forward to getting him on” it, trainer Jerry Robb told track publicity. “I breezed him on it and he seemed to love it. We might not find that out, but I don’t mind running in a short field in the mud either.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Robb was alluding to the weather. As of Thursday morning, there was a 75 percent chance of rain through Friday, although Saturday’s forecast looked better. Friday’s turf races were moved to the main track. Trainer Graham Motion entered Soleil Volant and Academy. Soleil Volant won his turf debut last month in a Delaware maiden special weight. Academy crossed the line first at Colonial three weeks ago but was disqualified for causing stretch interference. “We’ve been unlucky with” Academy, Motion told track publicity. “We entered him all summer in Saratoga, and he kept not getting in. One reservation I might have is coming back in three weeks off such a big effort.” Stormy Flight, Surfside Moon, Jus Too Fly, Gotta Have a Guy, Just a Fair Shake, and Lazlo enter off maiden wins. Hard Circle, Notmyfirstrodeo, and Kitty’s Son complete the field. Pascaline and Reggie Runs Rogue are entered for the main track only. Selima Stakes The Laurel Futurity’s filly counterpart, the $150,000 Selima, might be the best betting race on the card, providing it remains on turf and stays intact. Motion cross-entered Correto in Sunday’s Grade 3 Miss Grillo in New York, but said Thursday in a text message that “his inclination is to run [at Laurel] although I’m worried about the grass.” Correto, a full sibling to millionaire Spooky Channel and multiple stakes-placed Sun Bee, and a half to Grade 3-placed Margaret’s Joy, defeated Selima entrant Bembridge Ledge when both debuted in a maiden special on Sept. 1 at Kentucky Downs. Swan House displayed acceleration winning a maiden special weight Sept. 6 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Sweet Treasure wired maidens over that surface in her debut Aug. 17. Pure Majestic took a Colonial special weight field gate to wire at one mile for Robb, while speedy Good Long Cry finished second in three straight maiden fields in New York. Dear Louise adds blinkers after scoring at Delaware, a race she likely loses if Winning Streep doesn’t bolt through the inside fence. Winning Streep subsequently was beaten a head Sept. 8 at Laurel and is expected Saturday. Bonne Fille, Burner Account, Social Love, and Serene Spirit also entered. My Charm and Strong Like Sara are listed as main-track-only entrants. Japan Turf Cup In Yamato’s last race, he ran so fast, jockey Horacio Karamanos split his pants. Literally. “I’m not really sure what happened,” Nolan Ramsey, then-assistant to winning trainer Mike Maker, told Daily Racing Form. “Horacio came back, and his pants were all torn up.” The incident likely occurred with four furlongs remaining in last year’s Japan Turf Cup, a $100,000 turf heat for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/2 miles. Yamato tried to muscle his way through horses, was bounced around and pinched back, then re-rallied to prevail in comfortable fashion. Some things have changed. Ramsey has since gone out on his own, but Karamanos and Maker stick together as Yamato starts for the first time in 364 days. It’s worth noting that the same trainer-jockey combination scored with Red Knight, who returned from 336 days on the bench to win the 2022 Colonial Cup at 1 1/2 miles on turf. Dataman is a multiple stakes winner at Laurel and gets class relief after being wired by subsequent Grade 3 winner Goliad in a rich one-mile handicap at Kentucky Downs. As a half-brother to 12-furlong winners Serifos and Alignment, Dataman has the bloodlines to succeed at this longer distance. Motion told DRF before Dataman’s fifth-place finish in Monmouth’s Grade 2 United Nations at 1 3/8 miles, that the gelding is “a nervous Tapit that takes a lot out of himself in the mornings,” but that jockey Jorge Ruiz feels “distance isn’t an issue.” California Frolic showed his affinity for added ground when grabbing Monmouth’s Presious Passion at 12 furlongs on Sept. 8. Tide of the Sea won this race in 2021 and should show speed in his third start since Joe Sharp claimed him for $30,000. Max Swagger, Lord Flintshire, Dean Martini, and Hay Chief also are expected. Irish Cork is the lone main-track-only entrant. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
