The Stonestreet Farm broodmare band is always noteworthy, boasting multiple champions and championship producers in its ranks. But this year, in particular, Barbara Banke’s operation has been on a roll, listed on the breeder line for such major winners as Kentucky Oaks heroine Malathaat, continually successful Eclipse Award champion Gamine, and Metropolitan Handicap winner Silver State. Off a spring and summer of success, Stonestreet now comes into the Keeneland September yearling sale looking for continued scores at that venue. Stonestreet does race its homebreds, but ultimately sells the majority of its yearlings produced each season to keep the head count down and the operation solvent. The operation tries to retain well-bred fillies each year, and tries to sell the majority of its colts, sometimes staying in for a piece in partnership. With this strategy, Stonestreet has bred the highest-priced colt at the last two editions of the Keeneland September sale. Aussie Pride, by Curlin and out of Bounding, was a $4.1 million purchase by Godolphin in 2019. Last year, a Tapit colt out of Tara’s Tango led the entire sale, going for $2 million to the partnership of Eclipse Thoroughbreds, Robert LaPenta, Gainesway, and Winchell Thoroughbreds, with Banke retaining a share. The 68 Stonestreet-bred yearlings cataloged for this year’s Keeneland September sale include a half-sibling to one of its recent high-ticket horses, a Medaglia d’Oro filly out of New Zealand champion Bounding. But the Stonestreet offerings – which are spread among consignors Denali Stud, Eaton Sales, Elm Tree Farm, Gainesway, Indian Creek, Summerfield Sales, Taylor Made Sales, and Warrendale Sales – boast many other standouts in terms of recent catalog updates from summer races. One of the standouts is a Quality Road colt out of the unraced Malibu Moon mare Catch the Moon, who has become one of the brightest in the star-studded broodmare band. The mare’s first four starters, by four different stallions, are all graded stakes winners – Grade 1 winner Girvin and Grade 3 winners Cocked and Loaded, Midnight Bourbon, and Pirate’s Punch. Midnight Bourbon, the Preakness Stakes runner-up, has continued to update the page, emerging from clipping heels and losing the rider in the Haskell Invitational to finish a hard-fought second to champion Essential Quality in the Travers. On the Travers undercard, Gamine, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner and divisional champion, made the Ballerina her fifth Grade 1 victory. She has a yearling half-brother by Kantharos in the catalog for Stonestreet. Other Stonestreet-bred and -sold runners who performed well at Saratoga this summer include Grade 2 winner Clairiere, out of multiple Grade 1 winner Cavorting. Clairiere finished third in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks and second in the Grade 1 Alabama. Others are Grade 1 Met Mile winner Silver State, who was third in the Grade 1 Whitney, and impressive debut winner My Prankster. All three have half-brothers in the Keeneland September catalog, by Curlin, Uncle Mo, and Curlin, respectively. The Stonestreet fleet at Keeneland also includes half-siblings to champions Lookin At Lucky, Runhappy, and Trinniberg; a foal out of champion Dayatthespa; half-siblings to Grade 1 winners Complexity, Drill, and Lighthouse Bay; yearlings out of Grade 1/Group 1 winners Ask the Moon, Misty Lady, Molly Morgan, and Sassy Image; yearlings out of graded winners Berned, I’m a Looker, Faypien, Kauai Katie, Keen Pauline, Pianist, Road to Victory, Sally Bowles, Thyme for Roses, Valadorna, Vertical Oak, Wild Gams, and Winding Way; and half-siblings to graded winners Champagne Problems, Dust and Diamonds, Great Stuff, Keen Pauline, Marzo, Sally’s Curlin, Sarah Sis, and Strike It Rich.
