ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Kevin Attard said 2019 Canadian Horse of the Year Starship Jubilee has retired sound following Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Keeneland, during which she stumbled at the break and unseated jockey Florent Geroux. “It’s pretty definite that she’s been retired,” Attard said. “It looks like she’s going to the breeding shed. It was an unfortunate way to finish off the great career that she had, but that’s horse racing.” Owned by Blue Heaven Farm, Starship Jubilee was a bargain $16,000 claim by Kevin’s father, Tino Attard, early in 2017 at Gulfstream Park. She was transferred to Kevin Attard prior to her victory in the 2017 Nassau Stakes. The highlights of her career were Grade 1 scores in last year’s E.P. Taylor Stakes and this year’s Woodbine Mile. The popular 7-year-old won 19 of 39 starts and banked nearly $2.5 million. “It was really emotional for me to say goodbye to her,” Attard said. “She obviously meant a lot to me, my family, and my career. Horses like her become part of your family. You look forward to seeing them every morning in the barn. After a fast-closing second to Tio Magico in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special on Oct. 4, Stephen won the $250,000 Coronation Futurity over Tio Magico, earning a 75 Beyer Speed Figure in the 1 1/8-mile stakes for Canadian-breds. “Stephen has a nice turn of foot, he relaxes well, and he knows where the wire is,” Attard said. Haddassah got a 79 Beyer for earning his diploma when debuting in a mile and 70-yard maiden special in the race before Stephen’s Coronation on Nov. 1. “We were really high on him,” Attard said. “He had trained really well for a long time. It was nice to see him show up.” Attard said the Ulwellings’ Merveilleux will reappear in the $150,000 Ontario Damsel Stakes for Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies on Nov. 21. She notched her first stakes convincingly in the $250,800 Wonder Where, the third leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara on Oct. 25. “We’ve been high on her, and it was nice to see her come up with a good race,” Attard said. “It was a strong performance. She kicked clear.” Attard said Terra Racing Stable’s Amalfi Coast will try to win the Grade 2 Bessarabian for the second year in a row on Nov. 21. The 4-year-old found the mark for the first time this year in the Oct. 23 Sweet Briar Stakes, during which she rallied inside to prevail by 4 1/2 lengths with a big 98 Beyer. “She had a great trip and ran a great race,” Attard said.
