ELMONT, N.Y. – While Stage Raider, a half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify, wasn’t as dazzling winning his first-level allowance condition on May 14 at Belmont as he was in his maiden win a month earlier at Keeneland, trainer Chad Brown hopes the colt got a good education out of it. Stage Raider came from off the pace in the allowance, rallied along the inside, and won by three lengths. His final time of 1:38.22 for the mile was slow and resulted in a 77 Beyer Speed Figure, 19 points below his maiden figure, accomplished in the mud. :: Enhance your handicapping with DRF’s Belmont Park Clocker Report “The time wasn’t going to turn any heads,” Brown said. “He got a good education out of it, being down inside and going up the rail. Sometimes these kinds of horses that still need a little bit of seasoning, that’s the most important part of running in these races, to get more experience.” Brown said the Grade 3, $250,000 Dwyer on July 5 is possible for Stage Raider. Brown said he would have a better idea of where next to run Stage Raider after he works back from the race, probably next weekend. Brown said he is pointing Highly Motivated, 10th in the Kentucky Derby, to the Dwyer. He likens Highly Motivated to Practical Joke, who won the Dwyer after running fifth in the Kentucky Derby. Crowded Trade and Risk Taking, fifth and eighth in the Preakness Stakes, have been shipped to Saratoga for a freshening. Brown said he had no real excuse for Risk Taking and said Crowded Trade “wasn’t good enough, tried hard.” Brown said he would look to cut Crowded Trade back in distance, and would look for an easier type of 1 1/8-mile race for Risk Taking.
