The South Florida-based Spirit Wind could see more action at the Oaklawn Park meet after winning her first race over the local surface in the $150,000 Poinsettia Stakes on Saturday. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said Spirit Wind is a candidate for the local filly and mare sprint series. It begins with the $150,000 American Beauty on Feb. 1 and continues with the $150,000 Carousel on Feb. 22 and the $250,000 Matron on March 29.  Spirit Wind, who is 5, is a Grade 2 winner of more than $700,000. She shipped into Joseph’s division at Oaklawn for the Poinsettia.   “She’s going to race on next year,” Joseph said. “Mosie Miller, who owns her, loves to race. I think we’re going to go through that series of stakes. They’re all six furlongs. That’s her best distance. Whether she ships back [to South Florida] and then ships back again, I haven’t decided yet. I’m going to talk it over with Mosie.” The Poinsettia was one of three stakes wins for the Joseph barn on Saturday. The outfit also won the Sugar Swirl at Gulfstream Park with Mystic Lake and that track’s Suwannee River with Be Your Best. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
