Following Sea, a 3-year-old trained by Bob Baffert, was withdrawn from consideration for Saturday’s Grade 3 Chick Lang Stakes at Pimlico and will be moved to trainer Todd Pletcher in New York, according to Ned Toffey, the general manager of Spendthrift Farm, which owns the colt. Toffey further said that four 2-year-olds that were shipped to Baffert in California will be moved, most likely to trainer Richard Mandella, who is stabled at Santa Anita. “Given the circumstances we thought it was best to hit the pause button,” Toffey said about Spendthrift’s relationship with Baffert. “I think we need to step back and let’s see how things play out. We’re not ruling anything out in the future.” Baffert acknowledged that Medina Spirit, who won the Kentucky Derby on May 1, tested positive for betamethasone, a legal, therapeutic corticosteroid that is not permissible to be in a horse’s system on race day. After first saying Medina Spirit had not been treated with the medication, Baffert announced on Tuesday that Medina Spirit had been given an ointment, Otomax, that contained betamethasone, to treat dermatitis. Baffert has been barred from entering horses at Churchill Downs, site of the Kentucky Derby. He did enter horses at Pimlico -- including Medina Spirit and Concert Tour in the Preakness -- for Friday and Saturday. It was just last fall that Spendthrift was celebrating victories by the Baffert-trained Authentic in the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic, ones that ultimately led to the 3-year-old being named Horse of the Year. “Bob gave us the thrill of a lifetime last year,” Toffey said. “Bob has never had a positive test for us. Given the circumstances, the best thing for the time being is to step back.” Toffey said some consideration was given to entering Following Sea in the Chick Lang with another trainer, “but they wouldn’t know what the history of the horse was,” Toffey said. “That’s hard on another trainer.” Following Sea, a son of Runhappy, in his second lifetime start won a six-furlong maiden race by 5 3/4 lengths on April 10 at Oaklawn, earning a 97 Beyer Speed Figure. Toffey said the Chick Lang was being used as a stepping-stone to the Grade 1 Woody Stephens at Belmont on June 5. “It might be a little tough to go in there without this kind of a prep,” Toffey said. “If anyone can get one ready without a prep, it’s Todd. We’ll let him assess him and decide what to do.”
