HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Trainer Steve Asmussen does not need to use radar to get a read on Speedometer. “She’s fast,” he said. Speedometer will see action in Friday’s eighth race at Oaklawn Park. The two-other-than allowance is for fillies and mares over six furlongs. The field of nine includes I’m the Boss of Me, who comes off a third-place finish in the $250,000 Matron last month at Oaklawn, and recent allowance winners Dealing Justice and Hypersport. Speedometer has used her natural speed to win 4 of 12 starts, including the $50,000 Goldfinch last May at Prairie Meadows. She led throughout and covered six furlongs in a swift 1:09.95. Speedometer returned one start later to take the Pea Patch, an overnight stakes at Ellis Park. She won on the front end, covering 5 1/2 furlongs in a blazing 1:02.95. “She’s very talented,” Asmussen said. “She’s a really nice stakes-winning homebred for Winchell Thoroughbreds. We’re fortunate to be around her.” :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Speedometer is a 4-year-old filly by Tapit. Her dam, Speedinthruthecity, won three stakes and earned more than $400,000. Her victories included the Carousel, a sprint for fillies and mares at Oaklawn. Speedinthruthecity – who raced for Winchell Thoroughbreds and was trained by Asmussen – has since produced Nitrous. He’s a multiple stakes winner who earned more than $500,000. Speedometer made her first start of the year last month in a conditioned allowance at a mile at Oaklawn. She set the pace before finishing fourth in her first out since August. Asmussen has sharpened Speedometer for the cutback in distance with a three-eighths work in 36.80 seconds on April 12. The filly will start from post 6 under jockey Cristian Torres. “I think this is a good spot for her,” said Asmussen, who looks for Speedometer to be up on the pace Friday. I’m the Boss of Me broke from the rail in the Matron, was part of a contested pace, and finished third behind winner Wicked Halo and runner-up Matareya. The first two finishers from the race are being pointed to the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs. As for I’m the Boss of Me, she will start from post 9 on Friday. Francisco Arrieta has the mount for trainer Greg Compton. Dealing Justice closed for a head win in a March 2 allowance at Oaklawn. Hypersport also came from off the pace when winning a first-level allowance April 1 at Oaklawn. ◗ Stilleto Boy and Proxy, who were separated by a neck when first and second in the Santa Anita Handicap, get a rematch Saturday in the Grade 2, $1 million Oaklawn Handicap. The horses are part of a field of seven for the 1 1/8-mile race, which shares a card with the $200,000 Bath House Row for 3-year-olds. The Bath House Row offers its winner a berth into the Preakness Stakes, provided the horse is nominated to the Triple Crown. ◗ Echo Again, who won an Oaklawn allowance with a Beyer Speed Figure of 90 on March 30, is to make his next start in the Grade 3, $500,000 Pat Day Mile on May 6 at Churchill Downs, Asmussen said. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
