Breeders’ Cup participants Full Count Felicia and Nitrogen, along with Daily Racing Form photographer Barbara Livingston, are among the Sovereign Award finalists for the 2024 Canadian racing season, announced by the Jockey Club of Canada on Wednesday. Off her victory over Moira in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor, Full Count Felicia is the front-runner for Horse of the Year honors, which will be announced during the 50th Sovereign Awards ceremony on April 24. Trained by Kevin Attard, she is a shoo-in to take the female turf category over fellow finalists Fev Rover and Stormcast. BC Filly and Mare Turf winner Moira failed to start the required three times in Canada for Sovereign Award consideration for older runners, but the 2022 Horse of the Year will receive a Special Sovereign to honor her accomplishments. Also getting a Special Sovereign is Emma-Jayne Wilson, who surpassed Julie Krone’s earnings record for a female jockey last summer. The prestigious E.P. Taylor Award of Merit will be presented to esteemed trainer Roger Attfield, to recognize his countless achievements in the sport. Attfield is a member of both the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame. Nitrogen seems poised to become the first maiden to win a Sovereign. She finished third in two Grade 1 stakes, the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf and the Natalma, before graduating in the Ginger Brew Stakes on Jan. 4 at Gulfstream Park. The other 2-year-old filly finalists are Aristella and Souper Supreme. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now.
