HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Saffie Joseph Jr. checked off another very important box on his trainer’s to-do list last Saturday at Del Mar, the one that says Breeders’ Cup winner, when Soul of an Angel rallied from far back to upset the Filly and Mare Sprint. “It feels good,” Joseph responded when asked to describe his feelings about becoming a Breeders’ Cup winner for the first time. “Thankfully I was able to accomplish that with Soul of an Angel and get that out of the way. Hopefully, there will be many more to come in the future.” Joseph was rewarded for his decision to finally cut Soul of an Angel back to one turn after a series of longer races when capturing the Grade 3 Princess Rooney in impressive fashion here Sept. 21, despite believing deep down that she did not run her best race that afternoon. That notion gave him confidence she’d give an even better effort when facing a decidedly tougher test in the Breeders’ Cup. “The Princess Rooney really was an experiment, I didn’t know if she could go seven furlongs at that time, and it was just an assumption, based on her behavior in the paddock that day and the way she fell so far back in the opening furlong, that she could improve in the Filly and Mare Sprint,” Joseph explained. “To be honest, I really thought she’d be closer to the pace this time and I was very concerned when she dropped so far back again. But by the three-eighths pole, the way she was moving, I started to feel pretty good.” :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Soul of an Angel bounced out of the race well, according to Joseph, returned to Gulfstream Park on Tuesday night, and will get a brief break before preparing for her next start, which could come as early as Dec. 26 in the one-mile Rampart. “We’re going to work backwards with her from the Saudi Cup, and a race like the one-turn Rampart might be a good place to start,” Joseph said. Soul of an Angel’s stablemate Skippylongstocking didn’t fare quite as well on Breeders’ Cup Saturday when finishing sixth in the Dirt Mile. The race was probably lost five days earlier at the post position draw, when he drew the extreme outside in the 14-horse field. Skippylongstocking ultimately got trapped wide the entire trip before checking home less than six lengths behind race winner Full Serrano. “Overall, I thought he fired his race, he just couldn’t overcome the draw,” Joseph said. “He made his run and flattened out. He also switched leads late, similar to a year ago when he finished third in the Dirt Mile, which leads me to believe, perhaps, that a mile may not be his ideal thing.” Joseph said “Skippy” has returned to his winter home at Palm Meadows and will get a little longer break following a 2024 campaign during which he ran eight times and amassed earnings of nearly $1.5 million, pushing his career winnings over the $3 million mark. Joseph said at the moment he is thinking the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational here on Jan. 25 could be next on the agenda for Skippylongstocking as a prelude to a possible start in the Dubai World Cup next spring at Meydan. Turf-sprint feature draws 12 Sunday’s main event is a $61,000 allowance and optional-claiming dash carded at five furlongs on the turf that drew a full field of 12. The race is topped by Three Zero, a narrowly beaten second under similar conditions Oct. 12; Takecareofbusiness, second best in the Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint in his last start; and If Not for Luck, who has not started since being stakes-placed on the main track in a Florida-bred race last spring at Tampa Bay Downs. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Takecareofbusiness rallied to be second behind Reel Runner in the Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint, a race that despite its name was run over the synthetic surface. If Not for Luck, who has registered two wins and two seconds since joining trainer Carloz Perez’s barn a year ago, will be making his grass debut if Sunday’s headliner goes as scheduled. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
