ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Kentucky shippers with grass experience and Lasix added dominated Sunday’s Grade 3 Mazarine at Woodbine, with Somethinabouther scoring over As Catch Can in the 1 1/16-mile Tapeta route for 2-year-old fillies. Foxtastic, who was bet down to favoritism late, set a quick pace while being stalked by three rivals, including second choice Charlotte’s Heart. Somethinabouther ($33.70) came wide from mid-pack under Declan Cannon to prevail by a neck, in a time of 1:45. As Catch Can came flying from the back of the nine-horse field to secure second over a troubled Ready for Candy. Trained by Brendan Walsh, Somethinabouther earned $81,000 of the $138,740 purse for the partnership of X-Men Racing IV, Madaket Stables and SF Racing. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Mendelssohn was exiting a ninth-place finish in the Grade 2 Jessamine at Keeneland. “We’ve always liked her,” Cannon said. “When she broke her maiden, she ran a good number, and that’s obviously why we ran her in stakes company at Keeneland and Kentucky Downs. She’s going to be a nice filly next year, I think. She’s got the frame to grow into a nice horse. She’s a good-moving filly, and very athletic, so I knew the synthetic wouldn’t be an issue at all.” *** He’s Not Joking was an impressive winner of Sunday’s Grade 3 Grey going 1 1/16 miles for 2-year-olds, with Kazushi Kimura along for the ride. He’s Not Joking raced near the rear of the eight-horse field early before mounting a powerful four-wide rally to win going by away by four lengths, in a time much faster than the Mazarine - 1:43.18. Dewolf checked in second over favored Shifty, who established a fast pace before tiring in the final furlong. Trained by Josie Carroll, He’s Not Joking gave owner John Di Scola his first stakes victory. The son of Practical Joke was stretching out off a troubled third in the seven-furlong Display Stakes. “I was very proud of the way he stepped up and finished today,” Di Scola said. “I’ve got to give hats off to Josie. She thought he could get two turns. I was kind of doubting her, but she was spot-on. He showed up in a big way to polish them all off.” Kentucky-bred He’s Not Joking returned $23 to win and banked $81,000 of the $143,370 purse.   :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
