The connections of Social Fortress were ready to roll Aug. 18, when the $200,000 Sorority Stakes was supposed to have been held at Monmouth Park, but the race failed to attract sufficient entrants to be carded. So did the Sapling Stakes, on the Monmouth schedule for Saturday. Instead, the Sorority came back as the Saturday feature, and Social Fortress, six days later than intended, gets her chance to start her career with two wins. If Social Fortress performs anything like she did in her debut, none of the eight others in this two-turn, one-mile dirt contest for 2-year-old fillies will take her measure. Breaking from the rail in a five-furlong Delaware Park maiden carded for turf but rained onto dirt, Social Fortress showed enough speed to make the lead by one length at the race’s first point of call. Her advantage widened to three at the second call, six lengths at the stretch call, and Social Fortress, cruising through the final furlong, eventually tallied by 11 lengths. “We thought a lot of her from the start,” said Jamie Ness, who trains Social Fortress for her breeder, Joseph Imbesi. “When we got her, she did everything right. She stood out. Every time we did something, she excelled at it. She won easy that day. She played like she practiced.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! And the fact Ness looks to stretch the filly to a route in her second start means he sees her as a strong two-turn prospect. Social Fortress is by Social Inclusion, Grade 1-placed at 1 1/8 miles and hits at an above-average 16 percent with dirt-route runners. She’s the first foal to race out of the Parading mare Cold Hearted Pearl, a claiming horse who mainly raced in sprints, though she did win going two turns. “We didn’t want to be in a hurry with her after her first race. Even when we work her easy, she bullet works. I think we’re going over with a good horse whose long-term is two turns,” Ness said. “Is she ready for it? I think so.” Trainer Todd Pletcher clearly is looking for two turns with the Bernardini filly Yellow, who is entered for the main track only in a Friday maiden turf route at Saratoga. Yellow, bet to favoritism, made the lead in her lone start, a 5 1/2-furlong maiden on July 4 at Aqueduct, but proved no match through the final 300 yards for Italian Soiree, who beat her more than five lengths and came back to finish a distant second in the Adirondack Stakes. Yellow got a 52 Beyer for that showing, but while Monmouth-based Piggy Tales Up got a 51 for her winning debut July 27, she was the more impressive filly. Breaking from the rail, Piggy Tales Up contested the pace while pressed hard by an outside rival, who led narrowly to about the three-furlong marker. Piggy Tales Up never wavered in that tight spot, opening daylight in upper stretch and running strongly through the wire. Trained by Dan Ward, Piggy Tales Up is by Mitole, a sprinter during his career but a 17 percent sire with dirt-route runners. Baytown Butterfly also got a 51 Beyer when beaten more than 12 lengths less than two weeks ago in the Ellis Park Debutante. There, she ran into two standouts, Stilletos and Rich City Girl, Baytown Butterfly finishing with interest after being badly outrun the first half of that seven-furlong contest. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
