ARCADIA, Calif. – Bettors who suspect that Shocking Grey’s recent stakes upset was a fluke will have no problem fading her in the $100,000 Irish O’Brien Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita. Bettors who believe Shocking Grey’s win in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint was legitimate may look forward to backing her in the Irish O’Brien over the same hillside course. Eight fillies and mares bred in California are entered in the Irish O’Brien, a 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint in which Shocking Grey will try to make it two in a row. It would be one in a row for her new trainer and new owner. Days after Shocking Grey won the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint, she was sold at auction in a dispersal of Valpredo Farms. Previously trained by Jeff Mullins and owned by the Valpredo Family Trust, Shocking Grey is now trained by George Papaprodromou and owned by Rockingham Ranch. :: Playing Santa Anita? Shocking Grey can recoup a large portion of her $170,000 auction price if she reproduces her last-start stakes win Sunday in the Irish O’Brien. “She’s doing great. She’s been working every week, all good,” Papaprodromou said. Others in the Irish O’Brien are likely pacesetter Pushiness, late-running stakes winner Moment’s Pleasure, and allowance-caliber fillies and mares Cornelia Fort, Tam’s Little Angel, Lamporghini, Sneaker, and Prancingthruparis. The Irish O'Brien is part of a pick six wager on Sunday that starts with a two-day carryover of $218,963. The wager begins in race 5 (post: 3:05 p.m. Pacific). The upset by Shocking Grey ($19) in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint was part fate and part due to jockey Antonio Fresu. Shocking Grey was not intended for the stakes, scheduled for Jan. 11. It was too soon after her previous start. But racing was canceled due to fires, the stakes was postponed to Jan. 18, and Shocking Grey was supplemented. Fresu was aware that Shocking Grey is more effective when positioned outside horses in the stretch, a trip she was unable to find in previous starts. Fresu kept her three wide while forwardly placed, challenged for the lead crossing the dirt, and won comfortably by 2 1/4 lengths. Days later, she was up for sale, and Papaprodomou and Rockingham liked the 6-year-old mare. “We talked about it,” Papaprodomou said. “Obviously, she is a Cal-bred and looked like a good horse. They had her for sale, so why not?” Shocking Grey changed stables and “took it easy at the beginning,” Papaprodromou said. She resumed workouts in early February and has not missed a beat since. Recent history is on her side, as the last six Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint winners who ran next in the Irish O’Brien produced three wins and three seconds. Pushiness is the speed of the Irish O’Brien, making her first start in four months. A two-time stakes winner on dirt, Pushiness finished third in her only previous start on turf. Michael McCarthy trains Pushiness, whose rider is Umberto Rispoli. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
