ALBANY, Calif. – Trainer Steve Sherman won the Golden Gate Fields summer meet trainer’s title Sunday when favored Savan’ Brianne won the feature race to give Sherman his 22nd victory. Sherman and Billy Morey had started the day tied with 20 wins each. Sherman won the first race with Luberon, but Morey tied him by saddling I’m Going Places, who won the second race. I’m Going Places was Morey’s final entrant of the meet, while Sherman had four more runners. He finished second with Candy Five Hundred in the fifth before Savan’ Brianne’s victory in the eighth race. Sherman wound up the meet with 22 winners, 13 seconds, and 20 thirds from 81 mounts for a winning percentage of 27 percent and on-the-board percentage of 61 percent. Morey, who won the 2008 spring meet, had 21 wins, nine seconds, and 15 thirds from 67 mounts, a winning percentage of 30 percent and on-the-board percentage of 67 percent. Perennial leader Jerry Hollendorfer finished third with 14 victories. It was only the second time since 1985 that he lost a meet at Golden Gate Fields. Russell Baze again won the jockey title with 46 victories. Chad Schvaneveldt had 29 wins and Juan Hernandez 28.
