Creole Chrome is under consideration for the Indiana Derby after his 18-length win in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Cheval last Saturday night at Evangeline Downs, according to his trainer, Joe Sharp. Creole Chrome earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 96. Sharp said Tuesday Creole Chrome emerged from the race in excellent condition and that the Indiana Derby is one of two possible options for the horse who has returned to his base of Churchill Downs. The Grade 3, $300,000 Indiana Derby at 1 1/16 miles is July 11 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. “We’re looking at the Indiana Derby and also, we’re going to nominate to the Maxfield and see what that looks like at Churchill,” Sharp said of the Grade 3, $250,000 race for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs June 28. “But I think if you had to ask me today, I would say the Indiana Derby would probably be my first choice – just an extra two weeks and it seems like it might be a spot that could be reasonable considering where everybody else has run. Those would probably be our first two preferences.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Creole Chrome is a striking son of Volatile who races for Three Diamonds Farm. The Louisiana-bred stalked the leaders in the early stages before gliding to a dominant win. Creole Chrome covered the mile on a fast track in 1:37.58. Sharp removed blinkers for the Cheval, which was the first time Creole Chrome won a two-turn race from off the pace. “Even though it was only for a half-mile, what we wanted to see was him be able to settle off the pace like that,” Sharp said. “Obviously, if he’s going to take steps up the ladder moving forward, he’s going to need to be able to settle. And he showed that he seemed very comfortable to sit off those horses early on until just basically his talent took the best of them.” It was the second stakes win for Creole Chrome, who in February won the Star Guitar Stakes for Louisiana-breds at Fair Grounds. This spring, he ran fourth in the Grade 1 Blue Grass and sixth in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile. From there, the decision was made to return to the statebred ranks. “He’s a really nice horse,” Sharp said. “We’d run him in some really tough spots. He gave us good efforts in both of them, but I just felt like it was time to give him a little confidence. It was what we were trying to accomplish. “The race was everything we wanted to see and now, off of that, I feel like if we want to swing a little more he feels good about himself and we’re ready to take on a little deeper water next time.” Creole Chrome is 4 for 7 in his career, which began in November with a debut maiden sprint win at Fair Grounds. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
