ARCADIA, Calif. – Sharing was given an unconventional schedule of races in recent months in preparation for Friday’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Fillies at Santa Anita. Her winning performance under jockey Manny Franco was every bit of what was expected from a sentimental trainer in Maryland-based Graham Motion. The win gave Motion his fourth career victory in a Breeders’ Cup race. His second was the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf with Shared Account, the dam of Sharing. “I’m so appreciative of having this filly,” Motion said with a touch of emotion in his voice. “Shared Account meant so much to me.” Motion’s decisions regarding Sharing’s campaign in the last 90 days contributed greatly to her upset win in Friday’s $1 million race at a mile. Sharing won a maiden race at Saratoga on Aug. 18 and won the Selima Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Laurel on Sept. 21 as a final prep for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Most Eastern-based 2-year-old fillies pointed for the Juvenile Fillies Turf started in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 6 or the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 9. The extra time between the Selima Stakes and the Juvenile Fillies Turf appealed to Motion, even though the Selima Stakes is not a graded race. He was hoping Sharing would be selected by the Breeders’ Cup committee who reviewed the pre-entered horses in late October. She was. “We took the risk of not getting in,” Motion said. “We took the chance and it paid off. It was the right thing.” Franco, who won his first-ever Breeders’ Cup race, gave Sharing an ideal trip. Franco had Sharing in a stalking position in fourth for the first half-mile before moving closer to the front on the turn. Sharing took the lead from 9-2 Sweet Melania in the final furlong and won by 1 1/4 lengths over a fast-closing Daahyeh, the 7-2 favorite. “I was able to get the position that I wanted on the first turn,” Franco said. “It worked out great.” Sharing paid $29.60 and was the sixth choice in a field of 14. She was timed in 1:34.59, and earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 86. Motion watched earlier turf races on Friday’s program with an element of concern, hoping Franco would not have Sharing too far from the front. The opposite nearly happened. Sharing trailed by two lengths midway through the race and was always forwardly placed. “At one point, I feared we would be on the lead,” he said. Living In The Past had the early lead, through an opening quarter-mile in 22.74 seconds. With a half-mile remaining, Abscond led by a half-length over Sweet Melania in 47.02, with Living In the Past in third and Sharing in fourth. Sharing trailed by 1 1/2 lengths with a quarter-mile remaining, and was a length behind Sweet Melania with a furlong remaining. Daahyeh, the winner of two group stakes in England in June and September, closed from sixth in the final quarter-mile under jockey William Buick to edge Sweet Melania for second. “Second is always a funny feeling,” trainer Roger Varian said. “William got good track position. “The winner had first run and had a good turn of foot, and our filly didn’t look she would peg the winner back. She ran a good race.” Sharing broke from post 11, one gate to the inside of Sweet Melania, who was a game third, a neck behind Daahyeh. Sweet Melania won the Jessamine Stakes last month. Albigna, a Group 1 winner in France last month, was last early. She caught the eye with a late rally through the stretch to miss by 2 1/2 lengths. “She did fly home,” trainer Jessica Harrington said of Albigna. “She ran a helluva race. The speed she showed over the last two furlongs was something else. She didn’t disgrace.” Selflessly, the winner of the Miss Grillo Stakes, was fifth, followed by Croughavouke, Abscond, Tango, Shadn, Etoile, Crystalle, Fair Maiden, Unforgetable, and Living In The Past. Sharing, who is owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Antony Beck’s Gainesway Stable, won her third consecutive start in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, a streak that began with that Saratoga maiden win in August. The race, originally scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the turf, was transferred to the main track because of wet conditions and run at seven furlongs. Sharing was third in her debut in a maiden special weight race at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at Saratoga on July 21.  She has earned $730,300 in her four starts. Sharing, by Speightstown, was purchased by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners for $350,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale. Beck bought a half-interest shortly after the filly left the ring. “She was an athletic and racy filly,” said Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners said of his impression at the sale. “This filly was no bargain and I thought there was plenty of upside. “She’s been a dream, a machine from day one. It’s been unbelievably smooth every step of the way.”
