LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trainer Tom Amoss said Saturday morning that Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress came out of her front-running victory in the Churchill Downs filly classic Friday “in great shape” and that he’ll think about the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes on the June 8 Belmont Stakes card. “We’re going to enjoy this for a couple of days,” said Amoss. “She’s tired. I’m tired. She’ll get plenty of rest the rest of this month, I know that, as hard as she worked toward the Oaks. We’ll come up with a game plan when it’s time to.” Serengeti Empress, a 13-1 shot under Jose Ortiz, earned an 88 Beyer Speed Figure when finishing the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:50.17 for her fifth win from eight starts. The daughter of Alternation is owned by Columbus, Ohio, orthopedic surgeon Joel Politi. Amoss, who has had more than 3,600 winners in a career dating to 1987, said watching the Oaks with his wife, Colleen, and two daughters was the “absolute highlight” of his sensational career. “It was a mosh pit,” he said with a laugh. :: Kentucky Derby One-Stop Shop: Get PPs, Clocker Reports, handicapping guides and more Liora, who chased Serengeti Empress when finishing second by 1 1/2 lengths at 38-1, also is a possibility for the Acorn, said trainer Wayne Catalano, who is stabled next to Amoss in the Churchill barn area. “We’re very, very proud of her,” said Catalano. Positive Spirit, who dislodged jockey Manny Franco when clipping the heels of Jaywalk shortly after the break, was pronounced without major injury by trainer Rudy Brisset. Franco also was unhurt. The Oaks result furthered the recent dominance of fillies who have wintered at Fair Grounds. Serengeti Empress, the winner of the Rachel Alexandra in February, had her final prep in the March 23 Fair Grounds Oaks, and now a remarkable nine of the last 16 Oaks winners have used the New Orleans track as a winter base or for their final prep. The others: Ashado (2004), Summerly (2005), Proud Spell (2008), Rachel Alexandra (2009), Believe You Can (2012), Untapable (2014), Lovely Maria (2015), and Monomoy Girl (2018). Additionally, Serengeti Empress became the second straight Oaks winner to have won her career debut at Indiana Grand, following Monomoy Girl.
