DEL MAR, Calif. – The keen speed that carried Sell the Dream to a debut win at Santa Anita could prove pivotal on Sunday at Del Mar when she makes her second start in the $125,000 California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes for 2-year-old Cal-bred fillies. There’s one caveat: That first race was on turf, a surface trainer Brian Koriner chose because he wasn’t satisfied with how Sell the Dream worked on dirt at Santa Anita. Sell the Dream has worked twice since arriving here, and Koriner is hoping the main track will prove more agreeable as Sell the Dream stretches out to 5 1/2 furlongs after debuting at five furlongs. “She really didn’t work real well on dirt up there,” Koriner said. “I’ve liked her. I think she’s a good filly. Her dirt works since have been a lot better.” :: DRF's Del Mar headquarters – Stakes schedule, previews, recaps, past performances, and more Sell the Dream landed post 7, with Abel Cedillo back aboard. She was fast enough to flee the rail in her debut, and has more options with this draw, though her greatest weapon against this field is likely to be her speed. This race involves a subtle class drop, as her debut was against open company. The CTBA is race 10 of 11. Sell the Dream has nine rivals entered against her, but fewer are likely to start, most notably Absolutely Zero, who is unbeaten in two starts, both against open company, and is under serious consideration for the Grade 2, $200,000 Sorrento Stakes Aug. 13. Absolutely Zero was cleverly placed against males in a stakes race at Santa Anita on June 18. The filly edition of that stakes was won in significantly faster time. E Z Pharis, who was third in the filly division, figures to come running late in the CTBA and drew the outside box after landing inside draws in her first two starts. Walther Solis, who trains E Z Pharis, doubles up with Lov U Mean It, who beat maidens in her second start June 4 at Santa Anita. Like several in here, she needs to break better, especially so for her, as she’s already hindered by having to flee the rail. Smiling Lady beat maidens at Pleasanton in her second start after fading on all-weather at Golden Gate in her debut. Electric Lettuce showed spark in her debut, winning on all-weather at Golden Gate, but wilted in her second start on dirt in a stakes race at Pleasanton July 9. She could be ready to flower in her first start on this circuit. Fumano’s Girl was a fast-finishing second in that July 9 stakes at Pleasanton, that following a late-rallying debut win on all-weather at Golden Gate. :: Visit the Del Mar Handicapping Store for Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Picks, Betting Strategies and more. Also likely to make their presence felt late are Chismosa, being wheeled back two weeks following a debut win here July 23 in which she overcame a slow start, and Chedda Cash, who got off poorly in her debut before running on for third here July 22. Paddle On Polly adds blinkers are finishing last against similar at Santa Anita.
