Seize the Grey, the Preakness winner, will run in the $2 million Belmont Stakes on June 8 at Saratoga, trainer D. Wayne Lukas confirmed Tuesday afternoon. “He bounced back really well, exceptional,” Lukas said Tuesday though he had hinted on Sunday he was leaning toward running. “[Bob] Baffert and I were looking at him [Sunday] and Baffert couldn’t believe how he held his flesh.” The Blood-Horse was the first to report the news. Seize the Grey shipped back to Churchill Downs on Monday and will have at least one serious work there before shipping to Saratoga on June 1. Lukas said Seize the Grey could have a work at Saratoga as well. “He’ll have a pretty good work. We don’t pamper them. It’ll be here at Churchill,” Lukas said. “There’s a chance I might blow him out a half-mile up there too.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Seize the Grey has experience at Saratoga. He won his maiden going 6 1/2 furlongs in the slop on July 29 and then three weeks later finished third in the off-the-turf Skidmore Stakes going 5 1/2 furlongs. Lukas, 88, is a four-time Belmont Stakes winner, his last victory in the race coming with longshot Commendable in 2000. His most recent start in the race came in 2018 with Bravazo, who finished sixth behind Triple Crown winner Justify. Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up Mystik Dan shipped to Saratoga on Monday but a decision on whether he will run in the Belmont won’t be made for a little while, trainer Kenny McPeek has said. If he doesn’t run Mystik Dan, McPeek has not ruled out running the filly Thorpedo Anna, the Kentucky Oaks winner, who would have to be supplemented to the race for $50,000. She is also a candidate for the Grade 1 Acorn on June 7. Others pointing to the Belmont, which this year, will be run at 1 1/4 miles, include Kentucky Derby runner-up Sierra Leone, Florida Derby winner and beaten Kentucky Derby favorite Fierceness, Peter Pan winner Antiquarian, Fountain of Youth winner Dornoch, Honor Marie, and possibly Tuscan Gold and The Wine Steward. “That might the best race of the three,” Lukas said when told who was pointing to the Belmont. Lukas reported Tuesday that Just Steel underwent surgery at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital to repair a condylar fracture suffered in his right foreleg after he finished fifth in the Preakness. Lukas was not certain on the details of what Bramlage did but Lukas said the noted surgeon was pleased with the outcome. “He just came out of surgery, he was very pleased with it,” Lukas said. “Evidently, there is not any cartilage damage. He thinks he’ll be okay to race again.” Post times for Belmont Festival announced The New York Racing Association announced post times for the four-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga, June 6-9.
