Secret Oath, the 2022 Kentucky Oaks winner, has been retired and consigned to the Fasig-Tipton November auction, according to the filly’s trainer, D. Wayne Lukas. Secret Oath was considered a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita after her second-place finish in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga in her most recent start Aug. 25. But she’ll miss that race and go next in the breeding-stock auction scheduled to start Nov. 7 in Lexington, Ky. “She was such a consistent mare, so easy to be around and so talented,” Lukas said Friday at Keeneland. “The Kentucky Oaks, there are thousands of horses every year trying to win that race. Those are hard to come by.” :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2023: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division The news of the retirement was first reported by Horse Racing Nation. A 4-year-old by Arrogate out of the Quiet American mare Absinthe Minded, Secret Oath had won one race since her Kentucky Oaks triumph, the Grade 2 Azeri Stakes on March 11 at Oaklawn Park. She has finished second five times since the Oaks, and third twice. An ambitious start in the 2022 Preakness Stakes yielded a fourth-place finish as the 5-1 second choice. In last year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Secret Oath finished fifth in the eight-horse field as the sixth choice. Secret Oath retires with a record of six wins from 18 starts and career earnings of $2.44 million. She is owned and was bred by the Briland Farm of Robert and Stacy Mitchell, who are Louisville residents. As of Friday morning, Secret Oath had already been added to the Fasig-Tipton November sale, selling as Hip No. 180, consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent.   – additional reporting by Marcus Hersh :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
