With multiple stakes races being contested across North America on Saturday (Aug. 17), it could get lost in the shuffle that the top-ranked horse by measure of the weekly Hambletonian Society-Breeders Crown poll is in action at Eldorado Scioto Downs. Twin B Joe Fresh brings her six-race winning streak – all in stakes events – into the $100,000 Cleopatra Invitational for older pacing mares (race 13), a companion race for the $100,000 #Senditin Invitaional one race earlier. The well-travelled 4-year-old daughter of Roll With Joe has visited 10 tracks during her career but makes her first trip to Ohio as the likely heavy favorite in the six-figure race. "She's a good shipper," said trainer Chris Ryder, who admits that even he has been a bit surprised by her dominance. "A little bit, to be honest. I've always thought a lot of her and knew she had a lot of ability, but as we can all see this year's she's become the complete package." Twin B Joe Fresh appearing at Scioto was mostly due to circumstance according to Ryder. "It was two weeks since her last race and two weeks until she races again. The race kind of fit perfectly into her schedule," said Ryder, who mentioned the Milton at Woodbine Mohawk Park as Twin B Joe Fresh's next start. While Twin B Joe Fresh looks to continue her run of success on Saturday, she'll have to do it without regular driver and co-owner Dexter Dunn. The four-time Dan Patch Award winner for Driver of the Year has assignments at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania in the afternoon and Woodbine Mohawk Park at night, meaning he won't drive the mare for the first time since July 2023. Instead, Brett Miller gets the assignment from post one. "If it was too big of a concern, we wouldn't have done it," said Ryder about racing without Dunn in the bike. "We always like to have the guy who has been driving, but he couldn't make it, so it's ok." ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Twin B Joe Fresh owns a sparkling 25 wins in 34 career starts with $1.81 million earned for the group of Ryder, Dunn, Peter Trebotica and Barry Spak. Interestingly, she is not the richest mare in the Cleopatra as Grace Hill (post seven) leads her by just under $13,000 in that category, but she is struggling through a subpar year without a stakes victory to her credit. If there is to be any competition for Twin B Joe Fresh, it will likely come from Grace Hill's stablemate Strong Poison, the 5-2 second choice on the morning line from post two. The Virgil Morgan Jr. trainee has won six of 11 starts in 2024, including back-to-back Opens at Scioto as the odds-on chalk. Dan Noble will drive the 4-year-old. Completing the field from posts three to six (in order) for Saturday's Cleopatra are Kobe's Gigi, Hungry For Love, Man Dontforget Me and Zanatta. As for Twin B Joe Fresh and her chances of becoming the eighth female Horse of the Year winner since the turn of the century, Ryder certainly has his eye on the prize while keeping a firm hold of reality. "Yeah, [Horse of the Year] is what I'm trying to concentrate on," said Ryder. "I know we are only halfway through. There are plenty of stakes races to go, and there are other great horses out there." Ryder answered with a firm "no" when first asked if he would consider racing Twin B Joe Fresh against male competition in 2024 but did add a situation which could tempt him. "I would only do it if I had nothing to lose if I got beat," said Ryder, suggesting that if winning the FanDuel final at the Meadowlands in late November against the boys would net her Horse of the Year he would consider it. "There is one way to get a good mare beat, and that is to race her against the boys, but Open mares in New Zealand race against the boys and do quite well, so maybe we are a bit overprotective. It doesn't seem to hurt Jiggy Jog S." For now, Twin B Joe Fresh will continue facing her peers, with Saturday's race expected to be around 11:00 P.M. (EDT). The 16-race Scioto card kicks off at 5:50 P.M.
