While Hall of Fame trainer Ron Burke has 35 horses racing at five different tracks on Saturday, nearly half of them will be in attendance at Scioto Downs for a stakes-filled 17-race card that is anchored by the $260,000 Charlie Hill Memorial Trot and $250,000 Jim Ewart Memorial Pace. Burke will send out a pair of older trotters in the Charlie Hill (race 12), with Lexus Kody starting from post four and Chapercraz in the seven-hole. The morning line lists Lexus Kody as the 9-2 second choice, but driver Yannick Gingras, who was listed on both horses, went the other way with Chapercraz at 6-1. "Chapercraz was loaded last week; he was absolutely running over them in the Maple Leaf Trot elimination, but he never got through," said Burke, who admitted that he thought Lexus Kody may've been the better choice with how the race looks on paper. Chris Page now picks up that drive. "Chris drives all of my horses there and Kody is hot while Chris is quiet." Lexus Kody owns high speed off the gate and comes into the Charlie Hill off a head loss to the best trotter in North America – Jiggy Jog – in the Sebastian K at Pocono Downs. Prior to that he was an open-lengths winner in the Vincennes at the Meadowlands in 1:49 4/5. Chapercraz was victorious in the Hambletonian Maturity at the Meadowlands on July 13 but since has run into more of the best in Jiggy Jog, It's Academic and Southwind Tyrion. He finished sixth in the Maple Leaf elimination last time and didn't make the final. Hillexotic finished fourth in both the Maple Leaf elimination and final while racing very well. He leaves from post two with Austin Hanners driving. Another major contender is Winner's Bet from post five with Dexter Dunn in the bike. An early season sensation with a 1:49 3/5 victory to his credit, Winner's Bet broke last time in the Maple Leaf elimination and raced just evenly on the rim in the Cashman before that start. ► Check out our Scioto event page for full card analysis, live video and a 5% rebate on exotic wagers with DRF Bets! Burke is extremely excited about the return of 2023 Dan Patch Older Pacer of the Year Bythemissal in the Jim Ewart Memorial, race 13 on the card. The 5-year-old hasn't been in a pari-mutuel race since finishing fifth in the Battle of Lake Erie at Northfield Park on June 8. "He had a small odd thing on the back of his hind leg. I really didn't think it was anything, but my vet was a little worried, so we decided to miss some races. I wanted to be back in time for the Canadian Pacing Derby, but he didn't feel right yet and I felt like I was pushing him, so we decided to skip it," said Burke about the gelding. "This is my horse, I'm hoping, for three or four years, so I decided to take my time." If his return qualifier is any indication, Bythemissal is ready to fire a big race on Saturday. The son of Downbytheseaside posted a 1:51 3/5 win at The Meadows with Chris Page keeping him well in-hand late. "He was vicious. I actually trained him faster before the qualifier. I don't know if he has ever been better than he's been the last two weeks," said Burke. "He's ready to race. We aren't going there to just go around the track." Page and Bythemissal (7-2 morning line) start from a good spot in post six as they face a solid field of older pacers, including Ohio favorite Charlie May (Dan Noble, post one, 4-1), the red-hot I Did It Myway (Matt Kakaley, post three, 3-1), looking for his fifth straight win, Midwest kingpin Little Rocket Man (Dave Miller, post five, 7-2), going for a hat trick of victories, a pair of sub 1:48 winners in Ken Hanover (Dexter Dunn, post seven, 10-1) and Coach Stefanos (Ronnie Wrenn Jr., post eight, 6-1), and Buzzsaw Russ – recently second in the #Senditin and Dan Patch – who picks up Yannick Gingras in the bike from his second-tier starting spot in post 10 at 8-1. While the two Grand Circuit races will get most of the fanfare on Saturday at Scioto, Burke has a pair of undefeated 2-year-old pacing colts in action which warrant attention. Swingtown (four-for-four) and Rick Wink (five-for-five) compete in separate $65,000 Ohio Sires Stakes races carded as races five and 10, respectively. Burke has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the 2-year-old male pacing division as he also trains the fastest 2-year-old in history Sippinonsearoc (1:48 2/5) and the uber-talented Louprint. They have both been competing in Kentucky Championship Series races at The Red Mile. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter So who is the best of the best? "I think Louprint is better [than Swingtown] but I'm not sure," said Burke. "Rick Wink is a great colt and he's never been beaten, and Sippinonsearoc is a great colt. I love him, but I think Louprint and Swingtown are a step above. We trained them one time together and Louprint held him off. So I think Louprint is better but I don't know because anything you ask this colt [Swingtown] to do, he does. He's just a good horse, and he's bred to be a good horse; he's a brother to a Jug winner." Swingtown, who will head next to the Metro Pace in Canada, starts from pylon position with Chris Page in his usual spot in the bike. They figure to be 2-5 or lower at post time, as does Rick Wink, who also has the services of Page. Rick Wink, a son of second-crop sire Bit Of A Legend N, must overcome the second tier (post 10). Burke, who will start 17 horses on Saturday at Scioto, admits that many of them will be favorites, but he did single out one to watch outside of the previous mentioned odds-on options. "Outer Banks is one horse I think is starting to get into the right groove. With the [Sires Stakes] finals being late this year, I think he's a horse that is getting stronger and is ready to go a big mile," said Burke about the gelded son of Downbytheseaside starting from post six at 7-2 on the morning line in the sixth race $65,000 3-year-old colt and gelding pace. While Burke won't be attendance on Saturday as he'll be on an East Coast swing, taking in his horses at The Meadows on Thursday, Meadowlands on Friday, Yonkers on Saturday, Harrah's Philadelphia on Sunday and Pocono on Monday, the Hall of Fame trainer had nothing but praise for Scioto Downs. "They built probably the only place that rivals The Red Mile for watching a race live. They have these upstairs rooms with outside balconies that overlook the track; it is the greatest place to probably watch a race. It is awesome. That's why they get people there to watch the races, it is a great atmosphere," said Burke.
