The California-based graded stakes winners Say the Word and Anothertwistafate were the last two finishers in a 12-horse field in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf on Jan. 23 at Gulfstream Park. They have resumed training in California and are scheduled to start in different graded stakes on turf at Santa Anita in March. Say the Word, who won the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine in October in his final start for Gail Cox, was beaten 5 1/2 lengths by Colonel Liam in the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf. Trainer Phil D’Amato briefly considered starting Say the Word in the Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita, but passed in favor of an expected start in the Grade 3 San Luis Rey Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on March 20. “We’ll wait for the next marathon race,” D’Amato said. “I thought it was a little too quick. I want to get him back on track and be a Breeders’ Cup Turf-kind of horse.” Anothertwistafate, who won the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf Jan. 2 at Santa Anita, disputed the pace in the Pegasus World Cup Turf, but faded through the stretch to finish last. Anothertwistafate earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 103 in the San Gabriel. :: Click to learn about our DRF's Free Past Performance program. “I think he just bounced,” trainer Peter Miller said. “He ran a fast figure in the San Gabriel.
