RACE 6: SUBSANADOR (#5), a Group 1 winner in his native Argentina, makes his North American debut off a late-July layoff, but he sure looked good in some of his recent workouts, has won his last four races on dirt, and seems well-spotted in the San Antonio. SALESMAN (#2) had an easy front-running trip when dominating them going 13 furlongs over Breeders’ Cup weekend. That trip likely isn’t available to him Tuesday, but he has improved since switched to dirt. NEWGRANGE (4) is a consistent performer capable of working out a nice trip just off the early leader(s). (3) RACE 7: BOOK SMART (#7) must prove his mettle on the downhill, but he enters off four consecutive gate-to-wire wins, including a career-best 99 Beyer going five-eighths on Del Mar’s sod. He appears to be the one to catch and beat once again. He looks like a strong Ticketmaker “A” play, but BEEF WINSLOW (#4) should be considered as a backup turning back in distance after two straight wins at a mile. (2)  RACE 8: SPEED BOAT BEACH (#3) did quite well to be fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, considering it was only his second start following a lengthy layoff. He controlled a reasonable pace before tiring in the stretch, but still finished ahead of two next-out winners, including 109-Beyer Cigar Mile victor Hoist the Gold. He’ll be in the thick of things turning for home as will stablemate HEJAZI (#7), who has always hinted at potential and might be ready to live up to it after a runaway allowance win in first start following a spring layoff. (2) RACE 9: ALMENDARES (#4) received the right race flow when rallying off fast fractions to beat second-level allowance runners earlier in the month. He gave solid tries in both prior graded stakes, but there’s a concern he might not get the same sort of setup this afternoon. PANIC ALARM (#2) is another one-run closer potentially dependent on pace and racing luck. Respect his kick if this pace is fair to fast. Deeper tickets might include Reiquist, who can work out a nice trip from close to the pace after being overmatched in the Hollywood Derby. (2) RACE 10: CLEARLY UNHINGED (#9) ran quite well two back in the Chillingworth after contesting fast fractions before being run down in the stretch by older Kirstenbosch. She couldn’t find her usual position close to the pace when in too tough in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, but she drew a nice attack post position here and can work out a nice outside pace-pressing trip. (1) RACE 11: AFFAIR (#9) gained good fitness in her debut when third behind odds-on Grazia and She’s a Tempest, who returned to place with a 75 Beyer. She stretches out and switches surfaces out of a dam who won at 11 furlongs on grass for Mandella. VISUALLY (#5) worked hard to grab the lead through a 22.35-second quarter before faltering when it counted. She might revert to the rating tactics that resulted in her runner-up effort two back. FLIGHT TO QUALITY (#8) showed some late interest in her debut and goes out for a barn that has gone four for its last 13 (31 percent, $2.32 ROI) with second-out juvenile maidens on turf. (3) THE PLAY: 2, 4, 5 / 4, 7 / 3, 7 / 2, 4 / 9 / 5, 8, 9 = $72 ticket
