Graded stakes-winning sprinter Amazombie missed a week of training with a bruised foot that compromises his fall campaign, including a scheduled start Oct. 8 at Santa Anita in the Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes. “I’m behind about one work,” trainer Bill Spawr said. “I’ve probably got enough time, or I could fall back on the Cal Cup Sprint.” The $100,000 Cal Cup is Oct. 29. Amazombie crossed the wire first four of his first five stakes this year, including the Grade 2 Potrero Grande at Santa Anita and the Grade 3 Los Angeles, a Hollywood Park race from which he was disqualified for interference. The 5-year-old Amazombie finished third his last two starts, including the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar on July 31. Spawr planned to rest him for the Ancient Title and a possible berth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Spawr said Amazombie is okay now and is scheduled for a workout Saturday at Santa Anita.
