Sam Houston Race Park on Sunday announced overnight purses will be increased for the second time this meet beginning with Wednesday’s program. Sam Houston will increase all main-track overnight races by $6,000 each and all turf overnight races by $1,000 each. In addition, the track on Friday received Texas Racing Commission approval to add a card to the meet on March 31. “We are pleased to offer an additional day of racing and a second purse increase this meet,” Frank Hopf, senior director of racing operations for Sam Houston, said in a press release. “After we announced our first increase, we canceled four days of racing due to the winter storm in February that deeply affected Texas. Since then, we have been supported very well by our horsemen and horseplayers who continue to respond to our racing product.” Sam Houston puts on a card of seven stakes Saturday night. The Texas Champions races are worth a combined $700,000. The meet runs through April 3.
