HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Beach Bomb, under Luis Saez, made the lead soon after the start and led every step of the way en route to a one-length victory in the Grade 3, $150,000 The Very One Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 3/8 miles at Gulfstream Park. Immensitude, who raced an up-close third under Junior Alvarado, got up for second by a half-length over La Mehana. Queen Regent finished fourth followed by her Brendan Walsh-trained stablemate Forever After All, the 5-2 favorite, Whatlovelookslike, Be My Sunshine, Youknownothing, and Blush. The win was the first for Beach Bomb in four starts since she came to the U.S. from native South Africa where she won four of eight starts. She was coming off an eighth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf last Nov. 2 at Del Mar. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Beach Bomb set fractions of 24.17 seconds for the quarter, 50.48 for the half, 1:16.06 for six furlongs, 1:39.25 for a mile and then kicked home nicely in the lane to cover the 1 3/8 miles in 2:02.39. Beach Bomb returned $9.40 to win and earned a 92 Beyer Speed Figure. Saez said he thought he was going to follow Junior Alvarado aboard Immensitude. “But when I saw everybody try to take a little hold, I was right there so I decided just let her go,” Saez said. “She was traveling very nice. It seemed like she was getting out, but it was not her, it was the short turns. But at the top of the stretch, she gave me a big kick.” Motion said he had wanted to see Jorge Ruiz, aboard his other entrant Blush to be forward, but she never got there. “Luis helped [Beach Bomb] away from there and it looked like nobody wanted to go,” Motion said. Motion believes Beach Bomb could have a big year in the older filly and mare turf marathon turf division. “Grade 1s may be a stretch for her but she didn’t run badly in the Breeders’ Cup, she wasn’t beaten that far,” Motion said. “Everything had to go perfect to get to the Breeders’ Cup. We gave her a little break after that and really gave her a chance to catch up with herself and get settled in. Things well for this race so I felt pretty good about it.” Motion mentioned the Grade 3, $350,000 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland on April 25 as a possible next spot for Beach Bomb. Special Wan closes to take Honey Fox Two races after winning the The Very One on the lead, Saez played follow the leader on Special Wan to win the $150,000 Honey Fox Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile. With favored In Our Time setting fast fractions under Edwin Gonzalez, Saez kept Special Wan in second, about five lengths off the early pace, which was 46.47 seconds for a half-mile. Saez moved on Special Wan when Ozara came up inside of her and Special Wan tackled In Our Time in midstretch and gradually pulled away to win by 1 1/4 lengths. “We know the horse outside was the speed and we broke from there pretty well and everything came out like the plan, we followed her,” Saez said. “At the half-mile, I had a lot of horse. I saw somebody was making a move early but I was not worried because I know we had a lot of horse.” In Our Time finished second by two lengths over Poolside With Slim. Special Wan, a daughter of Belardo owned by Team Valor International and Steven Rocco, covered the mile in 1:32.77 and returned $9.40 as the third choice. Special Wan notched a new career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 94. Special Wan came to the U.S. last summer after being Group 2 placed in Ireland. In her U.S. debut, she won an allowance at Kentucky Downs before running seventh, beaten 5 1/2 lengths in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland last Oct. 5. Trainer Brendan Walsh thought Special Wan “had the makings of a very nice filly” but would probably benefit from having more time acclimate to the U.S. “She was a nice filly in Ireland, but they have to turn this way too, I was always confident she was going to do that and she’s done that,” Walsh said. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
