Runnning Brook Gal will begin her quest for an All American double on Friday, when she starts in one of seven trials for the Grade 1 All American Quarter Horse Derby at Ruidoso Downs. She will be making her second start of the year in the fourth race. The trials will run from the third through ninth races on a program that begins at noon Mountain. Runnning Brook Gal won last year’s Grade 1 All American Futurity by 1 1/2 lengths. She was freshened at the end of the season, and in her comeback race July 16 closed fast to finish second in a $25,000 optional claiming allowance at Ruidoso. It was her first race since November. “She got bumped around a little bit, ran a close second,” said Paul Jones, who trains Runnning Brook Gal. “It was her first race back, and she needed the race. She was running against horses who were fit, had been running. She looks good for this one. She’s done well.” Cody Jensen will ride Runnning Brook Gal for the first time Friday. Other notables set to start during the trials include Double Down Special, who was supplemented to the series. He goes in the sixth race. In his last start, Double Down Special won the Grade 1 Ruidoso Derby. Swingin Daddyo, winner of the Grade 1 Rainbow Derby in his last start, goes in the ninth race. The top 10 fastest times will advance to the All American Derby, which will be worth a record $1.5 million when it is run Sept. 5.
