Favored Running Bee denied Big Everest’s bid to win the $150,000 Artie Schiller Stakes for the third year in a row on Saturday at Aqueduct, scoring by a neck in a gutsy display under Dylan Davis. Big Everest led through moderate fractions in the one-mile turf route under new rider Kendrick Carmouche. Davis put 125-pound co-highweight Running Bee into contention from the outset and they tracked Big Everest until the head of the stretch. Running Bee gradually wore down Big Everest in the final furlong to prevail in a time of 1:35.50 over the firm ground. Fort Washington rallied wide from a trailing sixth for third and was followed by St Anthony, He’spuregold, and Sky’s Not Falling. Trained by Chad Brown, Running Bee ($3.40) collected $82,500 for owner-breeder Calumet Farm. The 5-year-old son of English Channel notched his first stakes in the Grade 3 Monmouth Cup in June and took the Sept. 1 Bernard Baruch at Saratoga. He was coming off a troubled fourth behind Carl Spackler and More Than Looks in the Grade 1 Turf Mile at Keeneland. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
