Last year, a gray Pennsylvania-bred went from success at Saratoga to a rich event in her home state of Pennsylvania, the Grade 2, $300,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters, where she finished fourth. She then went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. The gray Pennsylvania-bred filly Roses for Debra will try to do Caravel one better in Monday night’s Masters. She has a formidable foe in another speedy gray, Marissa’s Lady. Both have shown an affinity for this Tapeta track. Presque Isle’s signature race, the Masters for fillies and mares sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs, shares Monday’s nine-race card with the $150,000 Presque Isle Mile for older horses. First post is 3 p.m. Eastern. Last year, Caravel won the Smart N Fancy at Saratoga; this year’s edition was won by Roses for Debra. Caravel went on to win the Grade 3 Franklin County and BC Turf Sprint, both at Keeneland. She was the latest to emerge from the Masters and find success at the Breeders’ Cup, with champions Informed Decision, Musical Romance, and Groupie Doll all winning in Pennsylvania before the BC Filly and Mare Sprint. Bar of Gold finished second in the Masters en route to winning the 2017 BC Filly and Mare Sprint. :: Bet with the Best! Get Free DRF PPs and Cashback when you wager. Join DRF Bets. Roses for Debra has won four straight races on turf, including the Grade 3 Caress and the Smart N Fancy, since moving to trainer Christophe Clement this year. "She's been brilliantly consistent," said Miguel Clement, son and assistant of Christophe Clement. Originally trained by Michelle Brafford, the filly won three of her first four career starts at Presque Isle, including the Malvern Rose Stakes in July 2022. Owners John O’Meara and Cheyenne Stable have mentioned the Breeders’ Cup as a long-range goal for Roses for Debra. Marissa’s Lady was a four-time stakes winner on dirt and synthetic in 2021-22. She won a local allowance/optional-claiming race in July in her first start off a long layoff, besting Jill Jitterbug, who came back to win the Lady Erie Stakes at Presque Isle in August and is back for more in the Masters. Marissa’s Lady, trained by Bill Morey, next won the Satin N Lace Stakes, a local prep for the Masters, on Aug. 14. Runner-up Cancel This and third-place Napa Candy are both back Monday night. Morey spoke well of the competition. “There are some good horses running here,” he said. “That Jill Jitterbug is a nice filly – [trainer Ryan] Walsh does a great job with her. And those fillies that ran second and third to us [in the Satin N Lace] are nice fillies. We ran 1:08, and they were right there with us.” Marissa’s Lady has partnered with jockey Pablo Morales in both Pennsylvania outings. While they utilized the filly’s speed to win the allowance, in the Satin N Lace she sat second until the quarter pole. Morales said that day the filly is well-mannered and rates kindly. Cancel This, who set the pace in the Satin N Lace, is drawn on the rail in the Masters and can be expected to go, with Marissa’s Lady sitting a similar trip outside of her from post 3. Roses for Debra and Irad Ortiz Jr. are drawn in post 7 and will be able to watch Marissa’s Lady. Both fillies are fast enough to take the initiative if required, and it could be a cat-and-mouse game between the two riders. "The brilliant thing about her is she's versatile," Miguel Clement said. "She has great tactical speed, if needed, and a devastating turn of foot. ... She's also push-button. She's very genuine." Loyalty won the 2022 Lady Erie at Presque Isle. Most recently, she won the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes at Woodbine for Josie Carroll, making her the only member of this field to own a previous graded stakes win on a synthetic surface. She will have to avoid being hung wide from her outside post. Opening Buzz won a pair of stakes on Turfway’s Tapeta over the winter. Completing the field of 12 are Midnight Stroll, winner of the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks routing on dirt last year; Adaline Julia, a stakes winner on dirt at Lone Star; allowance-level winners Accomplished Girl and Sweet Amy; and Hideki, whose only wins have come for a tag. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures Presque Isle Mile The Presque Isle Mile – actually run at 1 1/16 miles – includes horses who have turned in outstanding route stakes performances on synthetic tracks since switching barns. Carrothers was claimed by trainer Marty Drexler for $25,000 out of a win on Gulfstream Park’s synthetic track in February. He won his next two starts before making three consecutive starts on Woodbine’s Tapeta track, with strong runner-up efforts in the Grade 2 Eclipse and, most recently, the Grade 2 Seagram Cup on July 29. Wolfie’s Dynaghost was shifted to Jonathan Thomas this season and won the Kentucky Cup Classic in March on Turfway’s Tapeta. Thomas had not yet confirmed where the gelding will run this weekend, as he was cross-entered on Saturday at Pimlico. Either way, he would be running back relatively quickly after winning an Aug. 31 allowance at Kentucky Downs. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
