HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Smiley Sobotka was the biggest disappointment among the favorites in the Sam F. Davis on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs when fading to finish ninth, beaten 22 3/4 lengths, as the 6-1 third choice. The colt was making his first start since finishing second to the well-regarded Keepmeinmind in the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs in late November. “I can’t find any excuse for him,” trainer Dale Romans said Monday. “We’ll just keep moving ahead with him and Sittin On Go,” a Romans 3-year-old who was a distant sixth in the Jan. 30 Holy Bull in his seasonal debut. “I’m giving both another chance to show what they can do.” Meanwhile, Romans said he lost training time recently with his best 3-year-old Girl Daddy, who has yet to work since getting time off after finishing third in the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The Davona Dale here Feb. 27 is out, but the April 30 Kentucky Oaks remains a realistic goal, said Romans. :: Enhance your handicapping with DRF’s Gulfstream Park Clocker Report “She’ll be back training this week after getting a little sick,” said Romans. “We’d still really like to make the Oaks with her.” Romans said he intends to run Coastal Defense in the Razorback at Oaklawn Park on Saturday, but a lousy weather forecast has put racing in jeopardy for this weekend at the Arkansas track.
