Two solid runs in this country and a more recent outing would appear to give Romagna Mia an advantage over Miss Yearwood when the two proven marathon performers square off in Tuesday’s $125,000 Via Borghese Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Originally scheduled for Sunday, the Via Borghese, a 1 3/8-mile turf race, did not have enough entries to be carded. The racing office hustled the field up to eight when the race was brought back. On paper, the Via Borghese looks to largely be a two-horse affair between Romagna Mia and Miss Yearwood. Romagna Mia, a 4-year-old English-bred daughter of Mastercraftsman, was a Group 2 winner in Italy as a 3-year-old. Purchased for $550,000 by Team Valor International at the Arqana December sale in December 2022, Romanga Mia went 0 for 4 between Qatar and France before being sent to trainer Graham Motion. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports In the United States less than a month, Romagna Mia finished third in the five-horse Grade 1 Beverly D. at Colonial Downs in August. That performance looked better when Beverly D. winner Fev Rover came back to win the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine and runner-up Gina Romantica took the Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland. Romagna Mia came out of the Beverly D. to rally from next-to-last to win the Grade 3 Dowager going 1 1/2 miles at Keeneland in October. “I thought she won very impressively and has done well since,” said Motion, a two-time Via Borghese winner. “She’s got a pretty good turn of foot for a filly that wants to get a distance.” John Velazquez rides Romagna Mia from post 6. Miss Yearwood went 0 for 2 at Gulfstream last winter but then won an allowance at Keeneland and the $225,000 Keertana Stakes on May 27 at Churchill Downs. Trainer Ian Wilkes said Miss Yearwood missed the major races in the summer and fall owing to a splint bone injury. :: Bet with the Best! Wilkes said Miss Yearwood, coming off a seven-month layoff, may not be fully cranked to fire her best Tuesday, but “she’s ready to run,” he said. Miss Yearwood, a 4-year-old daughter of Will Take Charge, will likely be coming from last under Chris Landeros. “It’s a funny thing, when you work her in the morning, she can do anything you want,” Wilkes said. “But for some reason, she developed this style where she drops herself back. That’s her, she gets into a nice rhythm and makes a nice run.” Tass won a second-level allowance going 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct in October before finishing second to Chili Flag in the Forever Together Stakes, also at Aqueduct last month. Going this distance and breaking from the outside, she figures to be a forward factor under Javier Castellano. Sensitivity, trained by Jose D’Angelo, is coming off an allowance win at Tampa Bay Downs. In 2022, she had shown speed going shorter winning a maiden and finishing fifth, beaten three lengths, in the Sanibel Island Stakes, both at 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream. This is her first try going this far. Indicia, Viva La Red, Coco, and the maiden Maman Joon complete the field. The Via Borghese goes as race 8 on a nine-race card that begins at 12:10 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
