ARCADIA, Calif. – Earlier this year, jockey Umberto Rispoli envisioned a dream scenario that Anisette would run in Monday’s Grade 1 Gamely Stakes for fillies and mares and Johannes would start in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile on the same day at Santa Anita. As the season continued, the goal became a reality. Late Monday afternoon at Santa Anita, Anisette and Johannes won their respective races, giving jockey Umberto Rispoli, 36, the milestone of winning two Grade 1 races on the same day for the first time. “We planned for this three months ago,” Rispoli said after Johannes’s win. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Both winners had similar trips, stalking the pace before reaching the front in the final furlong. Johannes rallied from midpack in a field of 11 to catch 11-1 Funtastic Again, winning by a half-length. As the race developed, Rispoli’s confidence grew, particularly when Johannes moved into third on the turn. The issue, in Rispoli’s mind, was where race favorite Du Jour, ridden by Flavien Prat, was positioned farther back in the field. “I felt I was loaded,” Rispoli said. “My worry was, where was Flavien? I know he’s a patient rider. I had to think about my horse.” Johannes ($6.40) was timed in 1:33 in the $303,000 Shoemaker Mile. The Beyer Speed Figure came back a 101, a career best for Johannes. “He had good momentum,” Rispoli said. “When he took the lead, he was waiting for the other horse.” Funtastic Again, starting in his first Grade 1 race on turf, finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of Du Jour, who closed from 10th. Funtastic Again, ridden by Frankie Dettori, led early and then tracked Goliad through a quick pace of 22.28 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 45.50 for a half-mile. Funtastic Again was always prominent through the stretch. “We went fast,” Dettori said. “When Umberto passed me, he fought back.” Du Jour (2-1) closed with a wide rally, passing seven runners from the quarter-pole to the eighth pole. “I found myself farther back than I wanted to,” Prat said. “There was no where to go inside and I had to go around. It didn’t set up for him.” There Goes Harvard, best known for winning the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup in May of 2022, closed from seventh to finish fourth by 2 3/4 lengths in his first start since a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March 2023. “I think it was a solid race off a layoff,” trainer Michael McCarthy said. “It was probably a little short for him, too.” Irideo finished fifth, followed by Easter, War At Sea, Air Force Red, Domincan Pioneer, Conclude, and Goliad. Johannes, a 4-year-old colt by Nyquist, is unbeaten in two starts this year for owners Joe and Debbie McCloskey, who race as Cuyathy LLC, and trainer Tim Yakteen. Johannes won the Grade 3 American Stakes on April 4 in his first start of the year. Johannes has won 5 of 9 starts and $423,859. Rispoli has been aboard for all of the wins. In six races since Rispoli gained the mount in late 2022, Johannes has lost once, finishing fifth in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs in May 2023 in what turned out to be the colt’s final start that year. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
