The way trainer Jamie Ness sees it, Repo Rocks can be his own worst enemy. “He’s a big horse who finds trouble a lot,” Ness said. “When he doesn’t find trouble, he runs pretty big numbers.” Ness hopes Repo Rocks can work out a trouble-free trip Saturday when he cuts him back to 6 1/2 furlongs in the $100,000 Fire Plug, one of four stakes on the nine-race Laurel Park program that begins at 12:25 p.m. A first- or second-place finish in the Fire Plug would vault the 7-year-old Repo Rocks, a five-time stakes winner, past the $1 million mark in career earnings. He’s done his best work at seven furlongs to a mile, but he has four career wins at 6 1/2 furlongs. His last win came against Virginia-breds at this distance in August at Colonial. This is the 46th career start for Repo Rocks, but it’s his first at Laurel. “I think he should like the big, sweeping turns at Laurel,” Ness said. “In his last race, he went into the turn second, came out second-to-last. The main thing is to get a good trip, and I think he’ll be really strong.” Prince of Jericho is a six-time winner at Laurel but is coming off runner-up finishes in a pair of allowance races at short prices. Trainer Brittany Russell was hoping for an outside draw for Prince of Jericho, but he’ll break from the rail here. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! What A Summer New York shippers Kant Hurry Love and St. Benedicts Prep head a field of six entered in the $100,000 What a Summer Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs. Kant Hurry Love, trained by David Duggan, has recorded six of her seven career victories at six furlongs, including a triumph in the Garland of Roses at Aqueduct. That win came off a six-month layoff. St. Benedicts Prep, trained by Linda Rice, is seeking her first black-type victory. She is coming off an allowance win going 6 1/2 furlongs on Jan. 2 at Aqueduct. Kant Hurry Love won the Garland of Roses by a neck over next-out winner Ain’t Broke, who was sold earlier this week as a broodmare prospect at Keeneland. “She bounced out of it in great order and held her form, so I’m very confident going in,” Duggan said of Kant Hurry Love. “Obviously, Linda is the caveat, but I think Linda is playing our game. She has to cut back and run the same numbers at three-quarters.” Kant Hurry Love, a three-time stakes winner, is scheduled to be sold at February’s Fasig-Tipton sale, Duggan said. Rice is hoping that the outside draw will help St. Benedicts Prep avoid getting in a speed duel with Kant Hurry Love. “She’s got a nice outside post,” Rice said. “She can sit off, but she’s fast. She’s got a lot of speed.” Ms. Bucchero is coming off a victory in the Willa On The Move Stakes, her third win from five starts at Laurel. Spencerian won the Politely Stakes for Maryland-breds, while Don’t Tell Kelly is coming off an allowance win. Jennings Speedyness, beaten a head by the Rice-trained Film Star in the Robert Manfuso Stakes on Dec. 21, looms the horse to beat in the $75,000 Jennings Stakes for Maryland-breds at one mile. “He had a really good workout at Parx and he ran well the last two races. Unfortunately, he just got beat,” said Ness, who, along with his wife Mandy, bred and co-owns Speedyness. “He ran his career-best number last time. I expect him to run something similar.” Feeling Woozy turns back to a one-turn mile following an allowance win going 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 27. Hittheroadjak, third in the Manfuso, and Kentucky shipper Big Blue Line are other top contenders in this nine-horse field. Geisha Oncourtcommentator has won three of her six career starts, though somehow she is 0 for 2 against Maryland-breds. She’ll look to rectify that in Saturday’s $75,000 Geisha Stakes for statebred fillies and mares at a mile. Oncourtcommentator was beaten by four lengths in a restricted allowance on Oct. 27 but came back to win an open-company second-level allowance on Dec. 21. She is coming back on relatively short rest. “She’s a slight filly,” Russell said. “She’s not that big strong type, but she’s a really good training filly and I’m hoping she can whip right back around.” After finishing sixth in the Carousel Stakes at 1 1/8 miles, Too Many Kisses is cutting back to a one-turn mile, a configuration at which she won an allowance on Nov. 17 at Laurel. Mavilus, an allowance winner at 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 30, and Bourbon Bay, third in the Politely Stakes last out, round out the list of contenders. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
