A memorial service for Mike Gass, a longtime trainer who died in June at the age of 79, will be held Sunday at Remington Park, according to a family member. The service will start at 2 p.m. Central in the chapel located in the backside kitchen building. Gass was a native of Nebraska who came up in racing working for trainers T.V. Smith and Jack Van Berg. He launched his own public racing stable in the early 1970s and raced largely on the circuit in Nebraska. He would go on to compete throughout the Midwest and Florida and in the 1980s made Remington Park his home track after moving to Oklahoma. Gass was a jockey agent to several riders before retiring. His family said he felt Best of the Crop was the best horse he trained. Gass, who grew up in a family that was in the sport of boxing, will be buried in Kansas. ◗ Remington and the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma will put on a full holiday festival on Saturday night, including appearances by Santa, his reindeer, and Clydesdales! :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
