A year after winning the Grade 3 Withers Stakes with Uncle Heavy, trainer Butch Reid will seek a second consecutive victory in the race for 3-year-olds on Saturday when he ships up the unbeaten Global Steve for the now-listed Withers. While the Withers lost its graded status, it retains its $250,000 purse and still awards qualifying points to its top five finishers toward the May 3 Kentucky Derby on a 20-10-6-4-2 scale. Global Steve is the only stakes winner in the field of seven entered for the Withers, run at 1 1/8 miles. Global Steve, a son of Bucchero, won the Future Stars Stakes going 6 1/2 furlongs on Dec. 30 at Parx Racing, five weeks after he won his maiden by 6 1/2 lengths going seven furlongs on Nov. 25. Global Steve did win from off the pace in both of his sprint starts, and Reid believes his horse is becoming more comfortable sitting behind horses. “He’s making a big jump here but he seems like a horse that’ll rate for me. He’s getting better at it in the mornings, settling down,” Reid said. “Last week, he had a nice and relaxed breeze. We asked him to kick to the wire and he did. We’re asking him first time to go around two turns and a mile and an eighth. It’s a big ask, but he’s a talented horse and we think he can get it.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Global Steve drew the rail and will be ridden by Mychel Sanchez, who was aboard Uncle Heavy last year. Mo Quality, trained by Chris Davis, is coming to the Withers off a second-place finish behind Coal Battle in the Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 4 at Oaklawn Park. Kendrick Carmouche rides Mo Quality. Omaha Omaha, a two-time winner, was a late-running second to Cyclone State in the Jerome, also on Jan. 4. Trainer Michael Gorham said the one-mile Jerome was too short for Omaha Omaha and is looking forward to getting him out to 1 1/8 miles. Captain Cook, a dominant 9 1/4-length victor of a Dec. 28 maiden race in the slop, Uncle Jim, Surfside Moon, and Corvus complete the field. Garamond points to Gotham Trainer Chad Brown had planned to run maiden winner Uncle Hulka in the Withers, but that horse got injured and will be out indefinitely. Meanwhile, Brown is looking at the Grade 3, $300,000 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct on March 1 for Garamond, a debut winner at Tampa Bay Downs last Saturday. A son of Uncle Mo, Garamond was a little reluctant to load, but after he did, he broke midpack, rallied inside of another horse around the far turn, and kicked clear in the lane to win by 1 3/4 lengths. He ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.04 and earned a 71 Beyer Speed Figure. “He showed a little immaturity behind the gate, he took a little while to get situated, and it probably caused him to break slow,” Brown said. “But once he got into the race, he moved through a hole there and galloped out well.” Brown said he was getting Garamond ready to run last fall when he had to stop him on him due to a sore shin. Brown said he feels Garamond deserves a shot at the Gotham, run at a mile around one turn. “I’m not trying to rush the horse, but this guy trains way above average, so I want to give him a shot up there if everyone’s on board,” said Brown, who trains Garamond for Juddmonte. Central Casting tries winners Central Casting is among four Mid-Atlantic shippers entered in a starter allowance/optional $50,000 claiming race for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs, one of the more competitive races on Thursday’s eight-race card. Central Casting, previously with Rudy Rodriguez, who was part-owner of the filly with SOK Racing and Mazel Stable Partners, has since been transferred to Jamie Ness at Parx Racing. Central Casting is making her 3-year-old debut after winning her maiden by 2 1/4 lengths on Nov. 29 at Aqueduct. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Two starts back, Central Casting’s first with blinkers, she finished third behind Nilo’s Rose. Four of the top five finishers from that race – including Central Casting – have come back to win. Delray, trained by Tyler Servis, is making her second trip to New York, having already finished second in this condition, beaten a nose going 6 1/2 furlongs on New Year’s Day. Delray won a maiden special weight race at Parx by six lengths on Dec. 9. D’s a Rock won her maiden for $40,000 claiming on Oct. 6 before finishing fifth in a pair of restricted stakes. She is now back in for $50,000. Double Airo, third in the Miss Behaviour Stakes at Parx, Rozzyroo, Brooklyn Rhapsody, and Notmysteppingstone complete the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
