VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Following slow interior fractions, Regal Riot and Arollercoasterride turned the Grade 3, $125,000 British Columbia Derby into a match race with Regal Riot edging clear approaching the wire in the 1 1/8-mile race at Hastings Racecourse on Saturday. The son of Jersey Town paid $5.70 and posted a final time of 1:50.73. Regal Riot broke alertly with Efrain Hernandez aboard and sat on the flank of Arollercoasterride, who posted a half-mile time of 48.88 seconds. The pair started to draw away from the field after six furlongs in 1:14.71 and, following a thrilling stretch drive, Regal Riot prevailed by a neck. Arollercoasterride was game in defeat, and it was another four lengths back to Boitano, who rallied late to finish third. "That not only made my day, it made my meet," Hernandez said. Regal Riot is owned by Lance Giesbrecht and Kim Peacock. "He rode a great race," Giesbrecht said. "He put him in the race right away and kept him up there. The horse ran his guts out and did what he likes to do, which is run hard." Regal Riot is trained by Robbie Anderson. He was bred in Britsh Columbia by Anderson's wife, Suzanne. It was a real family affair with Anderson's sister Barbara Heads training the runner-up. British Columbia Oaks Under a heady ride by Kimal Santos, Kloepatra came from mid-pack to win the $75,000 British Columbia Oaks by 3 1/4 lengths over Ayelllowroseoftexas. She paid $9.00 and, with 51-1 longshot Viva La Vino finishing third, the $2 triactor paid $4,641.20. Kloepatra broke on top, but, in a race with a plethora of speed, Santos eased her back while Belcarra posted a quick half-mile time of 46.32 seconds in the 1 1/8-mile race. She started to make her presence known heading into the stretch turn, went three-wide around the turn, took over the lead turning for home and drew clear. Ayellowroseoftexas rallied to edge Viva La Vino by a head for the runner-up spot. Viva La Vino stalked the pace, could not keep up with the winner, but held on well to just miss second. The final time was 1:52.01. "She did it well," said Santos, referring to how Kloepatra rated. "It was easy to get her back." A Kentucky-bred daughter of Cairo Prince, Kloepatra is trained by Larry Grieve and races for WYN Racing Stables. *** Infinite Patience extended her winning streak to nine races with a convincing 4 3/4-length victory over her stablemate Solarity in the $50,000 Delta Colleen. She paid $2.20 and posted a final time of 1:43.43 in the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares. She was ridden by Antonio Reyes, who had her well in hand once she made the lead at the half-mile call. We B Three came from a stalking position to finish third. A 5-year-old daughter of Sungold, Infinite Patience is trained by Barbara Heads and races for Ryan Nugent Hopkins and William DeCoursey. She was bred in British Columbia by DeCoursey. *** Porter Gent took them all the way in the $50,000 S. W. Randall Plate. He paid $4.10 for his 1 1/4-length front-running victory over Attention in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up. Uncharacteristic rallied late to finish third. The final time was 1:43.76. A 5-year-old Tod Mountain homebred by Second in Command, Porter Gent is trained by Edgar Mendoza.
