The Kentucky Championship Series finals will be contested on Sunday at The Red Mile as $3.4 million in purse money will be on the line throughout the 10-race card that gets underway at 5:05 P.M. (EDT). While many star 2- and 3-year-olds will be in attendance, the headline attraction is Hambletonian winner Karl. Installed as 7-5 on the morning line in the sixth race $400,000 final for 3-year-old colt and gelding trotters, Karl is riding a five-race winning streak that includes three Championship Series wins in Kentucky at The Red Mile. For the year he has won nine of 10 races and earned $877,839 under the care of trainer Nancy Takter, who co-owns the son of Tactical Landing with her mother Christina, Black Horse Racing, Crawford Farms Racing and Bender Sweden. "He's good and trained super [Thursday] morning," said Nancy Takter, who wasn't at all concerned by the fact that Karl only beat Secret Agent Man by a neck in their last meeting on September 8. "Secret Agent Man is a quick horse, but he wasn't getting by." Karl starts from post seven with Yannick Gingras in the bike while Secret Agent Man (5-2) has pole position for Andy Miller in the seven-horse field. Another 3-year-old star in action is Its A Love Thing (8-5) in the fourth race $400,000 championship for pacing fillies. The Dave Menary trainee, who has won seven of nine starts on the year, drew post four in the seven-horse field with James MacDodald in the bike. The third race features a budding megastar in Louprint. The Ron Burke, Weaver Bruscemi and Phil Collura homebred has won five of six races in his 2-year-old season and starts from the outside post five in the $400,000 final for rookie pacing colts and geldings. While the son of Sweet Lou, who is even money on the morning line, has defeated tonight's rivals multiple times, it is worth noting that Sippinonsearoc (9-5) is the fastest 2-year-old in history (1:48 2/5) and American Son (5-2) finished just a neck behind Louprint in their last meeting. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter The only $400,000 championship to draw a full field of 10 is the 2-year-old colt and gelding trot final slated as the tenth and final race on the program. This contest has the potential to be a wide-open affair as each of the four preliminary legs were won by different horses in the field - Chat Room (post two, 7-2); Go Dog Go (post five, 3-1); Super Chapter (post eight, 7-2); Blank (post nine, 8-1). Earning morning-line favoritism in the other $400,000 championships are: Looksgoodinloulou (2-1, 2YO Filly Pace, race five); Luna Lovegood (9-5, 2YO Filly Trot, race seven); Date Night Hanover (9-5, 3YO Filly Trot, race eight); Nuclear (2-1, 3YO C&G Pace, race nine). The eight championships on the card are complimented by a pair of $100,000 Commonwealth Series races that start the program as the early double. The Commonwealth is the second rung of a four-tiered Kentucky Sire Stakes system that also includes the Golden Rod and Wildcat. The remainder of the Commonwealth finals go on Monday's card, while the $50,000 Golden Rod finals are scheduled for Tuesday. Both Monday and Tuesday's races begin at 1:00 P.M. In addition to showcasing the current and future stars of the sport, the Sunday card will have plenty of wagering options available via multiple guaranteed pools. The opener starts a $5,000 GTD Pick 6, followed by a $10,000 GTD all-stakes Pick 8 in race three, a $10,000 GTD Pick 5 in race four and a $20,000 GTD Pick 4 with a $3,580 carryover in race six.
