DEL MAR, Calif. – When factoring what someone has done with what someone has, no trainer has performed better this summer at Del Mar than Dean Pederson, who has won five times from just nine starters. Two of those winners – the older turf specialist Carmelita’s Man and lightly raced sprinter Thorne House – will look to add to his gaudy numbers Friday, when they head fields in two of the three allowance-level races that highlight a nine-race card beginning at 3 p.m. Pacific. Carmelita’s Man has won a pair of stakes restricted to California-breds in his last two starts, most recently the California Dreamin’ on Aug. 6. On Friday, in race 3, Pederson takes advantage of race conditions that exclude statebred races to put Carmelita’s Man in an open first-level allowance that has a $40,000 claiming option. Carmelita’s Man, though, will be asked to negotiate 1 3/8 miles for the first time after specializing in middle-distance grass races throughout his career, his most recent wins at a mile and 1 1/16 miles. :: DRF's Del Mar headquarters – Stakes schedule, previews, recaps, past performances, and more “I don’t think it’ll be a problem,” said Pederson, an old-school trainer who prefers to have a small stable where he can be hands-on. “We won’t change his running style. Just cruise along, get to the half-mile pole, pick him up, and go.” Juan Hernandez, aboard for his last seven starts, including the two stakes wins, is back to ride. To prevail, Carmelita’s Man will have to beat the likes of Bee Catcher, Win the Day, and Oncoming, who were second through fourth, respectively, in a similar race Aug. 5. Thorne House flashed speed when defeating maidens in his second start Aug. 7 going six furlongs and now moves into a statebred first-level allowance, with an optional $20,000 claiming tag, going 6 1/2 furlongs in race 7. “We’re very excited about him,” Pederson said. “He’ll need to step up and run a big race. He acts like a very talented horse.” Thorne House, bred and co-owned by Pederson’s main client, John Harris, is a 3-year-old gelding who has blazed the opening quarter-mile of both his races in 21 and change. :: Visit the Del Mar Handicapping Store for Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Picks, Betting Strategies and more. While he has speed in abundance, he lacks experience, and he’s facing some hard-knocking veterans, including Slam Dunk Sermon, who is 10 for 26 lifetime; Northvale Road, who is first off the claim for the white-hot Jonathan Wong; the fleet Curry, who figures to fire his best shot fresh; and Loud Mouth, a former stakes winner who has been off form but seems better cast in this sprint as opposed to the steady diet of routes he’s been fed of late. “We knew coming down here we had a couple of live chances, but this has been great,” Pederson said while mentioning the highlight was winning a classified allowance last Saturday with his veteran sprinter Fashionably Fast. “The old man,” Pederson said, referring to the 7-year-old Fashionably Fast, “that was the cherry on top.” The final allowance-level race, race 8, is a five-furlong turf sprint featuring the speedy stakes-winning mare Leggs Galore.
