HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Real Macho figures to be one of the longer prices on the board going postward a week from Saturday in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth. But that does not concern trainer Rohan Crichton, not after watching his still lightly raced but improving 3-year-old run down the prohibitive favorite Born Noble to win an entry-level allowance race going a mile at odds of 26-1 in his previous start. Real Macho, a son of Mucho Macho Man, bounced back in his last start after a disappointing two-turn debut when beaten nearly 10 lengths by Change of Command launching his 3-year-old campaign four weeks earlier. “I don’t know what happened in his first start this year, but I don’t think it was the two turns that was the problem,” said Crichton. “He was still green, so we’re going to throw that race out and give him another chance at that distance. I don’t think I would have said winning his last start and beating that big favorite of Todd’s [Pletcher] like he did would have been a surprise to me had it not been for the fiasco the race before.” :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Crichton said Real Macho couldn’t be doing better at the moment, although he has not worked him back since his stunning victory here several weeks ago. “I think that last race gave him a lot of confidence,” said Crichton. “I opened galloped him a mile and let him run out some at the end last Saturday and I’ll probably just do the same again this week. Another open gallop, although perhaps not as strong as the last one. I truly believe the farther the better with him, and it would be excellent if we see a lot of pace in the Fountain of Youth, just like we did last time.” While the Fountain of Youth will command the most attention here a week from Saturday, the Grade 2 Davona Dale earlier on the card will be noteworthy as well, as it’s expected to feature the 3-year-old debut of reigning 2-year-old filly champion Just F Y I in her first start since clinching her title with a neck victory over Jody’s Pride in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Jody’s Pride is also nominated to the Davona Dale, but is not likely to run. Just F Y I has been training for her much anticipated 3-year-old debut at Payson Park where she’s posted four recorded works to this point including a bullet half-mile in 48.60 seconds on Feb. 10. Friday’s card is highlighted by a pair of statebred allowance and optional-claiming races, the first for 3-year-olds going seven furlongs on the main track, the second carded at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf for older fillies and mares. Both events will offer a purse of $59,000. Jigsaw, who defeated mid-level optional-claiming and starter allowance competition at the same distance in his last start, will likely be a tepid favorite against a field that also includes the second and third finishers from that event, Dr Bayter and Always a Way. The former galloped out best of all after the race and will add blinkers for his rematch with Jigsaw while Always a Way also has grounds to improve after breaking slow, racing wide, and finishing on his left lead in the trio’s previous encounter. Other key contenders include Roar Rady and Louie the Sun King, second and fifth, respectively, in a six-furlong statebred allowance dash on Jan. 26, along with Improptude, a game maiden winner when putting blinkers on for the first time in his last start. The co-featured eighth race lured a field of only six statebred turf specialists, led by the 9-year-old Peace Seeker off a third-place finish under similar conditions last month; Palace Flirt, a one-sided, gate-to-wire, maiden winner making her grass debut on Jan. 10 for trainer Keri Brion; and Beach Party Bingo from the barn of leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
