LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Over the last several years, male racing prospects or racing or stallion prospects have been offered in the second week of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, with that segment of the marketplace steadily gaining traction. Those offerings again provided a shot in the arm for the sale, as the 2-year-old colt Liam’s Legend, a maiden winner just weeks ago, sold for $325,000 to lead Tuesday’s session of the sale. Keeneland reported 241 horses sold in Tuesday's Book 4 finale, the seventh session of 12 overall, for revenues of $7,613,900. In last year's comparable seventh session, when the sale had not yet moved into racing or stallion prospects, 263 horses sold for $7,821,100. Tuesday's average price checked in at $31,593, a gain of 6 percent from $29,738 in the comparable session last year. The median rose 18 percent, to $20,000 from $17,000. The buyback rate for the session was 19 percent, even with last year. Liam's Legend was purchased by Khalid bin Mishref from the consignment of Indian Creek, as agent. Mishref is a leading owner in Saudi Arabia and regular at prominent international sales. He has made major moves to expand his Thoroughbred holdings this fall. He bought an interest in Grade 1-winning 3-year-old Math Wizard prior to the Breeders' Cup Classic. More recently, he purchased an interest in last year's Belmont Stakes runner-up and this year's Dubai World Cup runner-up Gronkowski, who has an ambitious international campaign planned for 2020. Mishref indicated that his new purchase will also campaign internationally. “He will suit the track in Saudi Arabia,” Mishref said. “He will like the distance. As a 2-year-old, he already won at a mile and an eighth. We are targeting eight, nine, 10 furlongs. He might have potential for the [2021] $20 million Saudi Cup.”  Liam's Legend finished fifth in his first career start in September at Churchill Downs before breaking through with a three-length maiden score in the 1 1/8-mile race Mishref referenced, Oct. 26 at Keeneland. He scored that victory for trainer Rodolphe Brisset and the ownership partnership of Niall Brennan, Mike Ryan, and Mike Anderson. Liam's Legend from the first crop of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam’s Map, already the sire of Grade 1 winners Basin and Wicked Whisper. He is out of the stakes-winning Cherokee Run mare Indian Legend, a full sister to graded stakes winner Cherokee Queen. Indian Legend's first starter is the stakes winner Kenda, who, like Liam's Legend, is by an Unbridled-line stallion. The second-highest price of the session, like Liam’s Legend, came late in the day as a supplemental entry, and was also a winning juvenile by a freshman sire. The filly Shedaresthedevil, by Grade 1-winning juvenile Daredevil, sold for $280,000 to Flurry Racing Stables. She was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, as agent for owners Glencrest Farm and Qatar Racing Limited. Shedaresthedevil won her debut at Churchill Downs in June before spending the summer and fall competing in stakes competition in California for trainer Simon Callaghan. She finished third in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar, beaten just a nose for second, in her second career start; was fourth in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf; and, most recently, was second in the Anoakia Stakes on Oct. 13 at Santa Anita. “It was a fair price for a horse who has proven she is a stakes runner,” Clay Scherer, who signed the ticket, said. “She will go to Brad Cox at Fair Grounds and then to Oaklawn when they open. Keeneland does a great job [offering] racehorses that are ready to go. They offer a great ready-made product.” Shedaresthedevil is the second stakes horse out of the winning Congrats mare Starship Warpspeed, who has produced four winners from as many starters, also including Grade 3-placed juvenile Mojovation. It is the family of Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Crafty C. T. For hip-by-hip results, click here.
