Ratification won her second consecutive major stakes for 3-year-old fillies in Sunday’s $421,326 All American Oaks at Ruidoso Downs, giving Juan Vazquez his first win as a trainer amid poignant circumstances. A former jockey, Vazquez was an assistant trainer to John Buchanan until Buchanan’s death of heart complications in Ruidoso, N.M., on Aug. 28. Ratification had set the fastest qualifying time for the All American Oaks in time trials on Aug. 23. Ratification ($3.40) won the All American Oaks by a length over trial race winner Kiss Thru Fire (4-1). Kieva, another trial race winner, finished third in the field of nine at 13-1 beaten 1 1/2 lengths. Ratification was ridden by Francisco Calderon. As Calderon passed the finish line, he looked skyward and waved in tribute to Buchanan. Ratification ran 440 yards in 21.34 seconds. The All American Oaks was the fifth consecutive win for Ratification, who was unbeaten at Ruidoso Downs this year. She won a division of the Ruidoso Derby trials in May, but did not qualify for the final. Ratification won a time trial for the Rainbow Oaks on July 5 and won the $315,739 final on July 18. This is the first year that Ruidoso Downs ran the Rainbow Oaks and All American Oaks, which were developed in an effort to give fillies an opportunity to compete in lucrative races without facing males. Ratification, owned and bred by Bobby Cox of Fort Worth, has won 7 of 13 starts and has earned $380,446. This fall, Ratification is likely to run in the Texas Classic Derby at Lone Star Park, which has time trials on Nov. 7 and a final on Nov. 28, according to Bill Melson, racing manager for Cox. In the following race, the 4-year-old gelding Dexxter won his Ruidoso debut in the $125,000 All American Gold Cup at 440 yards. Ridden confidently by James Flores, Dexxter ($6.20) won by a neck over 7-5 favorite Danjer. Valiant Tiberias, the winner of the $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park last December, finished third. Dexxter ran 440 yards in 21.25 seconds. Owned by Dunn Ranch Sammy Valeriano and trained by Monty Arrossa, Dexxter is unbeaten in three starts this year, having won the two leading races for older horses at the Remington Park winter-spring Quarter Horse meeting – the Leo Stakes at 400 yards on May 2, and the Debbie Schauf Remington Park Championship at 440 yards on May 30. Dexxter raced last year at Los Alamitos, where his best result in a major stakes was a third in the Southern California Derby last December. Dexxter has won 8 of 18 starts and has earned $459,012. Arrossa said Friday that he would like to run Dexxter in the $600,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos on Dec. 12.
