GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The millionaires Rated R Superstar and Silver Prospector will battle rising runners Shaaz, Mish, and Tesoro in the Grade 3, $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile on Monday at Lone Star Park. The race for 3-year-olds and up is the main event on Lone Star Million Day, which features six stakes worth a total of $1.2 million. The Sexton Mile is not only the meet’s richest race, but also the final leg of an all-stakes pick four that will have a minimum guaranteed pool of $200,000. The 50-cent bet runs on races 9-12. The Sexton Mile drew a field of 10, but Elector will be scratched, according to trainer John Sadler. The group of nine includes stakes winners Flash of Mischief, Popular Kid, Sheriff Brown, and Mine That Star, a half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. “It’s a tough race, a good wagering race for the public,” said Danny Caldwell, owner of $1.5 million earner Rated R Superstar. “You’ve got proven older horses. You’ve got several coming into the race out of allowances and smaller stakes that are younger and possibly could be a monster down the road. :: Want to start playing with a $510 bankroll and have access to free Formulator? There’s a lot of questions on these young horses and how good they could be down the road.” Mish is making his stakes debut after racing at Gulfstream Park, where he has won his last three races by a combined margin of 18 lengths. His last two starts have come at a mile, and they have yielded his best two Beyer Speed Figures, 96 and 94. “Mish got really good since we went a mile,” said trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. “One of his owners, Mark Cornett, thought we should stretch him out to a mile. The first time was in the slop and it was, ‘Was it the slop or the distance?’ and then he came back and duplicated it on a fast track. Now, a two-turn mile is another question he has to answer – and the class, obviously. He definitely deserves the chance.” Mish will break from post 6 under Edwin Gonzalez. “He’s a forward kind of horse,” said Joseph. Shaaz also figures to be prominent after wiring his rivals in a two-other-than allowance April 2 at Santa Anita. Tesoro raced on the lead in his last start, when he won a mile allowance on the turf April 30 at Golden Gate Fields. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures “There’s a lot of pace,” said Caldwell. “I knew we’d get a lot of pace going a mile.” Rated R Superstar used his closing kick to win the Grade 3 Essex Handicap in March at Oaklawn Park. Earlier in the meet, he won at a mile in the Fifth Season. Rated R Superstar comes off a seventh-place finish April 23 in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap, a race from which a key speed horse was scratched. “He went into the race training really good,” Caldwell said. “We expected a good effort. The race, we just didn’t get any pace. It just didn’t set up for us.” Reylu Gutierrez will ride Rated R Superstar for trainer Martin Villafranco. A strong pace would also serve Silver Prospector, a Grade 2 winner coming off a fifth-place finish in a May 1 allowance at Oaklawn. Stewart Elliott has the mount for trainer Steve Asmussen.
