Raging Torrent is not a one-hit wonder. He followed up on a Derby Day breakout performance with a 2 1/4-length score Sunday at Churchill Downs in the $175,000 Maxfield Stakes. Under Antonio Fresu, Raging Torrent had a good draw in the seven-furlong Maxfield, breaking outside the four rivals left to face him following two scratches, and he made the most of it. Edging forward outside Otto the Conqueror to lead through an opening quarter-mile in 22.37, Raging Torrent went a half-mile in 44.65 while in the clear and in hand, and still held an advantage of at least two lengths midway around the turn. Past the quarter pole and into the homestretch World Record made a run along Raging Torrent’s inside as Otto the Conqueror stayed in the game to his outside, but Raging Torrent turned both back, was going away at the finish, and continued to increase his lead during the gallop-out. World Record ran out of gas at the sixteenth pole as Otto the Conqueror edged him by a half-length for second while well clear of Carbone and Hold My Bourbon. Lucky Jeremy and This Is Uscar were scratched. Raging Torrent, who paid $4.16 as the heavy favorite, was timed in 1:22.05 for seven furlongs in a race restricted to 3-year-olds. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Fresu rode Raging Torrent for trainer Doug O’Neill and owner Mark Davis, and O’Neill said Fresu told him the Churchill surface Sunday played slower and more laboring than the track over which Raging Torrent had romped in a first-level allowance May 4. Raging Torrent that day earned a glitzy 106 Beyer Speed Figure, a radical move forward from his previous top figure. By Maximus Mischief out of Violent Wave, by Violence, Raging Torrent made his two starts before the last one in turf sprints and the two before that in dirt routes. “We were hoping he was a two-turn, Derby kind of horse. He’s obviously a one-turn specialist,” O’Neill said. “Antonio was able to give him a mid-race breather, called on him, and he responded.” O’Neill said plans call for Raging Torrent to run at Saratoga this summer. The races for him there are the Amsterdam over 6 1/2 furlongs on July 26 and the Grade 1 Allen Jerkens at seven furlongs on Aug. 24. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
