Proud Spell, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2008, was bred Saturday to Indian Charlie and has been officially retired, according to the filly's breeder and owner, former Kentucky governor Brereton C. Jones. Proud Spell raced once as a 4-year-old, finishing second as the 1-5 favorite in a March 12 allowance at Oaklawn Park. She was being pointed to the April 4 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn before being diagnosed with swelling in a hind ankle. Brett Jones, the son of Brereton Jones, said Proud Spell was bred at the family farm, Airdrie Stud in Midway, Ky. "We'll check her out in 15 to 16 days to see if she's in foal," Jones said Monday. "She's doing great." Proud Spell, by Proud Citizen out of Pacific Spell, by Langfuhr, was trained by Larry Jones and ridden by Gabriel Saez throughout her career. Her championship season included wins in four graded races, including victories in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks and Grade 1 Alabama Stakes. In all, she won 7 of 13 starts and earned $2,131,610.
