DEL MAR, Calif. – After knocking off the La Jolla Handicap last Saturday, and in advance of running a pair of horses in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks this Saturday, trainer Tom Proctor will try to pick up some pocket change Thursday at Del Mar when he sends out Biorhythm and Theatre Star in the day’s featured race, an $85,000 allowance race for female turf runners. Only six are entered in the one-mile grass race, which has been placed as the second race on the eight-race card to keep it out of the pick six. Theatre Star is back in Southern California after traveling to Woodbine for the Grade 2 Dance Smartly on July 6, when she finished seventh of eight. In her race prior to that, she was second at Santa Anita in a race whose conditions are similar to those of Thursday’s feature. “Maybe shipping her wasn’t a good idea,” Proctor said Tuesday. “We wanted to get her off the pace last time, but not all the way. I think we took her out of her race.” :: DRF Live: Get real-time updates and insights from DRF reporters and handicappers at Del Mar each race day Biorhythm has raced beyond a sprint just once, when third in a one-mile optional-claiming race here last summer. Proctor had intended on running her in last week’s Daisycutter but had to call an audible when turf sprints – Biorhythm’s specialty – were canceled for the remainder of the meeting. DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 2 Biorhythm. Trainer Tom Proctor is 3 for 7 with a $6.00 ROI over the last five years at Del Mar with horses moving from synthetic to grass.Click for more details. – Mike Hogan :: Learn more about Formulator | Buy Formulator PPs :: Follow the @DRFFormulator Twitter feed and get free Formulator facts “I’m stuck because of those idiots at Del Mar. You can quote me. I don’t care. I’ve told them how I feel,” Proctor said. “I wanted to run her in the Daisycutter. She looked like a good thing in there.” KEY CONTENDERS Theatre Star (Last 3 Beyers: 82-88-89) ◗ This will be her first start at Del Mar, the fifth track at which she has competed. If she runs back to her June 5 race at Santa Anita, in which she was second, she is strictly the one to beat. ◗ Earlier this year, in an optional-claiming race at Santa Anita, Theatre Star defeated Moulin de Mougin, who last weekend captured the Grade 2 John Mabee. Biorhythm (Last 3 Beyers: 64-89-90) ◗ Distance is the main question for her, since she usually wants to be aggressive right from the start. ◗ The comebacking Miss Ellany, drawn on the outside, is the only horse who can go with Biorhythm early, but anyone who tries to go with her likely would pay a high price. Bunairgead (First start in North America) ◗ This Irish import has been idle for nearly one year but ran against high-class group stakes runners overseas and fits well against these. DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 4 Bunairgead. Trainer James Cassidy is winless in 12 starts over the past five years in turf routes with foreign shippers new to his barn.Click for more details. – Mike Hogan Queen of the Sand (Last 2 Beyers: 87-81) ◗ She has raced just twice in this country since arriving from Ireland and improved sharply from her first start by defeating a slightly softer optional-claiming field last time out. DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 1 Queen of the Sand. Trainer Patrick Gallagher is 2 for 22 with a $1.30 ROI over the past two years in turf routes following a win.Click for more details. – Mike Hogan
