DEL MAR, Calif. – Trainer Doug O’Neill as of Thursday said he was planning on sending out all three 2-year-old fillies he’s entered in the Grade 2, $200,000 Sorrento Stakes on Saturday at Del Mar. He may need all that firepower to defeat the Michael McCarthy-trained Procrastination, whose debut victory at Los Alamitos last month stamped her as one of the top prospects on this circuit. Procrastination, favored at 8-5 on July 4, set off her own fireworks while cruising to an eight-length victory while earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 74. She moves from five furlongs to six on Saturday, and her biggest challenge may be overcoming the rail draw, though she and Ricky Gonzalez extricated themselves from post 2 in a similar seven-horse field in her debut. “You always prefer to be drawn outside with very young horses,” McCarthy said at his Del Mar barn Thursday morning. “Her first start was great, and she’s come back and trained like she should be the favorite.” McCarthy trains Procrastination, a daughter of Not This Time, for the Eclipse Thoroughbreds partnership. :: DRF's Del Mar headquarters – Stakes schedule, previews, recaps, past performances, and more O’Neill counters with Absolutely Zero – who was withdrawn Sunday from the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, in which she’d have been favored – as well as Satin Doll and Vegas Magic. Collectively, they’re 5 for 5. Absolutely Zero, a California-bred daughter of Nyquist, won twice at Santa Anita, including against males in the Fasig-Tipton Futurity on June 18. “The additional week should help her,” O’Neill said, citing several reasons why he decided to go for the Sorrento over the CTBA. “This is a graded stakes race. And it’s worth $200,000.” Satin Doll rallied to defeat maidens going five furlongs the first week of the meet, on July 23, scoring a 31-1 surprise despite a poor start. Vegas Magic, a debut winner at Santa Anita in June, shipped north to beat males in the Everett Nevin at Pleasanton last time out. “She was anxious in the paddock, didn’t have the greatest of trips, and still won,” O’Neill said. “I’m excited to see her progression.” Abel Cedillo, aboard for the maiden win, has the call. :: Get Del Mar Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. Three others are entered in the Sorrento, the most intriguing being Dazzlingdominika, new to this circuit after being privately purchased following a maiden win May 13 at Churchill Downs. She’s turned in a solid series of works for her first start for the meet’s leading trainer, Phil D’Amato, including a five-furlong work here Aug. 1 in 58.80 seconds that was the best of 35 at the distance. Infinite Diamond, a troubled second in her lone start at Gulfstream for Patrick Biancone, should be a late threat. Classymademoiselle is an 0-for-3 maiden who has been her own worst enemy, with poor starts every outing. The Sorrento, a prep for the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 10, is race 9 on a 10-race card.
