ELMONT, N.Y. - Pretty Mischievous defeated 13 3-year-old fillies when she won the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 5. On Friday, when Pretty Mischievous returns to action in the Grade 1, $500,000 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park, she will have mostly a new group of rivals to deal with in a field of eight. Perhaps the most intriguing newcomer is Munnys Gold, the freakishly fast filly who will try and stretch her speed to 1 1/16 miles for the first time in the Acorn. The Acorn, which this year has been lengthened from one mile, is one of three Grade 1s from among five stakes on an 11-race card. First post is 12:50 p.m. Munnys Gold, a daughter of Munnings, has yet to run beyond seven furlongs. She won her first three starts by a combined 38 lengths. Sent off the 2-5 favorite in the Grade 2 Eight Belles at Churchill Downs, she was upset by Red Carpet Ready. Todd Pletcher, trainer of Munnys Gold, said the filly spiked a temperature a few days later, and Pletcher deduced that perhaps “she had a little subclinical virus brewing,” he said. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Pletcher will also send out Frosty O Toole in the Acorn. Frosty O Toole, in her first start following a private purchase by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, finished last of six in the Grade 3 Gazelle at Aqueduct on April 8. Pretty Mischievous, who beat the Pletcher-trained Gambling Girl by a neck in the Kentucky Oaks, drew post 6 in the Acorn. On Saturday, Pretty Mischievous worked a half-mile in 48.19 seconds over Belmont’s main track. Gambling Girl, by the way, is being pointed to the Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga on July 22, Pletcher said. Dorth Vader, fifth in the Kentucky Oaks, is the only other runner from that field to return in the Acorn. She will be going out for the first time for George Weaver. Trainer Chad Brown entered three horses in the Acorn: Accede, third in the Eight Belles, Occult, winner of the Busanda in January, and Randomized, an impressive maiden winner in March. Goodgirl Badhabits, 2 for 2 for Brittany Russell, completes the field. The Acorn goes as race 9. War Like Goddess tops New York War Like Goddess, an eight-time graded stakes winner, will make her first start at Belmont Park when she heads a super field of eight females set to run 1 1/4 miles on turf in the Grade 1, $600,000 New York Stakes. War Like Goddess, trained by Bill Mott, is coming off a victory in the Grade 3 Bewitch, her third consecutive victory in that race, in April. War Like Goddess has done her best work at 1 3/8 miles to 1 1/2 miles. She lost her lone start at 1 1/4 miles when she was upset by Virginia Joy  in the Grade 2 Flower Bowl last September at Saratoga. Virginia Joy is one of four entered here by Brown, who also also entered Marketsegmentation, Shantisara, and McKulick, the latter having won the Belmont Oaks last July, and the Jockey Club Oaks last September. With The Moonlight, second in the Belmont Oaks, turned the tables on McKulick in the Saratoga Oaks and is here for the New York. Didia, who has won all four of her U.S. starts for trainer Ignacio Correas IV, will make her first start in a North American Grade 1. She was a two-time Group 1 winner in Argentina in 2021. Flirting Bridge, a close third in the E.P. Taylor, is coming off an allowance win at Keeneland. In Italian heads Just a Game In Italian, a three-time Grade 1 winner, heads a short field of five for the Grade 1, $500,000 Just a Game going a mile on the Widener Turf course. In Italian, who beat With The Moonlight in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland on April 14, finished third in this race last year to stablemate Regal Glory. After that, In Italian won the Grade 1 Diana and Grade 1 First Lady before finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Brown has won five of the last six runnings of the Just a Game. On Friday, he also sends out Speak of the Devil. Spendarella, who won the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks last summer and is 4 for 6 overall, was beaten by Fluffy Socks in the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile on the Kentucky Derby Day card at Churchill Downs. Wakanaka, second in last year’s Just a Game, and New Year’s Eve, who has finished third behind Didia in her last two starts, complete the field. The Just a Game goes as the fourth. License Fee quartet back for Intercontinental The top four finishers from the License Fee Stakes going six furlongs here on May 7, return for the’s Grade 3, $200,000 Intercontinental Stakes going seven furlongs. Bubble Rock won the License Fee, her second win in as many starts over the Belmont turf, defeating Poppy Flower, Goin’ Good and Messidor. The Intercontinental also drew Amy C, who has not been out since winning the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 2. She has won three of her last four starts for trainer Phil D’Amato. Bay Storm and Sarah Harper, second and third behind Caravel in the Unbridled Sidney Stakes at Churchill, and Clitheroe, a Belmont allowance winner off an eight-month layoff, complete the field. Amazing Grace takes on males in Gold Cup Trainer Christophe Clement entered the 5-year-old mare Amazing Grace against 12 males in the Grade 2, $200,000 Belmont Gold Cup at two miles on turf. Clement also had Amazing Grace nominated to the Grade 1, $600,000 New York Stakes, but felt that race was coming up extremely strong. “If the ground was soft I’d go in the New York,” Clement said. “On firm ground, I’d prefer to go longer.” Amazing Grace, who began her career in Germany, made a sharp U.S. debut winning the Grade 3 Orchid at Gulfstream on April 1. She finished fifth in the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay here on May 5. The last five Belmont Gold Cups have been won by horses based outside of the U.S. Trainer Joseph O’Brien won the race in 2021 with Baron Samedi and sends out High Definition this year. The Belmont Gold Cup drew 2020 male turf champion Channel Maker, now a 9-year-old. Trainer Archibald Kingsley entered Barbados, Cibolian and L’Imperator. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
